We got a new puppy and have been putting him on the back patio while we are at work. He poops in the same place, everytime, right in front of the back door. How do we get him to change his "preferred" spot?

You could try moving his poop to the spot you want him to go in. Reinforce that spot when you are home by bringing him to it when he has to go. Otherwise, it's really hard when you aren't home to supervise.

Yup! What Jamiya said! And sometimes, when they smell where they have gone they go there again. I know that is true about tinkle at least, not poop, but it may be, so you may want to try some Nature's Miracle or something to take away the scent. I have noticed Ranger has certain places on walks he likes to poop, depending on which direction we go, and it is always the same spot! Something like Nature's Miracle may be worth a try! I know what it is like when a dog uses the cement, Ranger used to not go in the grass if it was wet, he would go on the driveway instead!

Where do I get Nature's Miracle? I think that the scent is a big part of it. He has a huge yard with grass that he could use but he chooses the porch.

We found it at Petsmart, but I am sure that Petco, or Petland, or some other petstore would have it! Petsmart is just one the most conveinient, cheapest, 'varietiest' places near us!

Does Nature's miracle work the same way on cement that it does on Carpet? Just curious, because Cameron, nomatter how many times we catch and scold, still thinks the utility room in the basement is a bathroom. She goes nowhere in the house except that stupid room, which has a cement floor. Our basement isn't walled in yet, so unfortunately we have to block her off from the entire basement to keep her out of that room, which I don't like to do because we like to keep her toys in the main room and even put a carpet in there for her to lay on. Anyway, she goes in the same spot every time, and I have cleaned it with N.M. I don't know how many times! Are there any stronger solutions to use?

Hehe, put carpet in there so he doesn't have a cement floor to go on anymore. *ducks*

I don't know about getting smell out of cement. I'll look around and see if I can find anything.

Nala has actually started to go to the door and whine if we missed her less obvious signals. Up until now, if we missed the "standing silently at the door" signal, she was fairly likely to just go on the carpet. It didn't happen often since we always watch her pretty closely, but this new behavior gives me hope!

You could try like jamia said. I used to tape a peice of foil to the spot. about 12"X12". That seemed to work for me
