its usually split into 2 halves, first being when she is first in heat when the vulva starts to swell and they maybe some bleeding but not all bitches bleed during there heat this usually lasts about 9-10 days depening on the bitch.

THe second is when she will first allow a dog to mate with her to do this manually place the palm of your hand at the bace of her back just above her tail and rub in a circular motion if she is reseptive she will move her tail to the side to show her vulva and she may lower her back abit, This is also about 9-10 days long also depending on the bitch.

I have known some bitches to have silent heats where there is noway of knoing she in heat apart from her constant licking of her vaginal area.
