Ha ha! When we watch TV with our Brittany, he likes to dig in his bean bags (yes, he has his own bean bags, we got new filling, and he got the old stuff!). It is VERY loud! Ranger has yet to learn to love fetch, because he likes going to 'defuzz' the tennis ball whenever we throw it, but it is a little easier when you play with two balls, except sometimes you throw one, he goes and gets it, brings it back because he sees the other, you throw the other, he forgets to drop the first one, goes after the second one, realizes he already has one and doesn't need it, and then you don't get anywhere! Did your lab naturally love fetch, or did you have to teach it? And if you had to teach it, how did you do it? Maybe we should try with balls that have no fuzz to 'defuzz'!

tuttifrutti,
Duke would always bring back whatever you throw but at first he would not give it back as he wanted to play keep away. Then he figured out if he gave it to me I would throw it again and that was more fun. He really likes to leap into a lake and swim after the ball/stick. Then he drops it at your feet and waits until you bend over to pick it up before he shakes. I guess he thinks we both should be soaking wet.
Try swapping the ball for a kibble treat. Bet Ranger figures it out real quick.
Good Luck

Thanks! And I hope so, we want him to be like a frisbee dog thing, only first we want him to master the whole 'bring it back and give it to me' part!

Heh. Nala is a "defuzzer" as well.

When we first got her, she would bring balls back. Now she doesn't, even though she knows I will throw it again. When she brings toys to me, she won't let go - I finally figured out she wants to play TUG, not fetch.

But I won't play tug with her for the most part. Not until she learns better manners and "drop it." My husband plays tug with her sometimes, but that's his problem...

ha ha Jamiya! That sounds a lot like Ranger! He also thinks its more fun to play keep away than run after the ball, although he loves running after the ball too! He has gotten to the point where he will bring it back and stand behind you, but unless you are really quick, he runs away again, thinking you will FINALLY play chase with him!

I love the look in her eyes. She comes up to me with her stuffed mailman (PetSmart stuffed toy) crammed into her mouth. She is snorting because it is clenched in her teeth and smushing her nose. She looks up at me with these eyes full of hope and also caution and you can practically hear her say, "Will she do it this time? Will she play tug with me? Or is she going to take it away?"

I am glad Jake doesnt fetch, he is missing that lab gene, because Wylie more than makes up for that with her frisbee. We never taught her and she just loves it. We have what we call the magic chair. Whoever sits in the particular chair knows that Wylie will place her frisbee on their laps for hours to play fetch!

Ha ha honeybear! That is too funny! Yeah,Ranger gets that look in his eyes too. He tries to look innocent, but it doesn't work. And his tail starts wagging as soon as you even look like your going to take the ball or whatever! Oh! Jamiya, have you ever tried Dr. Noys? Just curios! They sqeek, and are indestructable, well, at least if they get torn open there is not stuffing, they have lambs wool or something like that inside of them! They are great!

Was Duke ball obsessed from the start? A friend of mine's lab has OCBD (obsessive compulsive ball disorder :O) but my lab is not that interested. She's pretty young though, maybe something she'll grow into? It will be such a good way to get rid of all that puppy energy!

loonyluna,
I think Labs are obsessed with just having fun and playing. That ball could be a stick, rock, or anything. Tug-o-war is another favorite. By nature Labs seem to demand the attention and interaction. It's what makes the breed so much fun to have as part of your family.

Sorry, Jamiya! I never went to the website! After Ranger pulled an arm off of his snowman from his mommy, and started eating the stuffing, we went to the store for more chewies to make up for that, and we saw Dr. Noys! They are great! Except for the bit of hair, and on his latest one the tag (he has had 3, one he had an accident in his crate all over, he ate something that didn't agree with his stomach, and so he got a frog, and then he got a bear for christmas, and the frog is now outside only, and the bear is inside only!) They are great! THey come with a replacement squeaker and everything! I think if you went to www.Petsmart.com and typed Dr. NOy's in the search box it would come up with it!

I already tried seraching for Dr. Noy's and I didn't find anything. Nala does have a toy that is lambswool and flat, with no stuffing inside. Is that what you are talking about?

I never get her the regular plush toys. She is too hard on them and all she wants to do is defuzz them. The lambswool ones seems to last the longest, although I have to fix her mailman again. The canvas ones are okay (I like Fat Cat).

I try to put them away when she stops tossing them around and settles in to just chew and rip at them so they will last longer. Every once in a while I don't catch her and I see her yanking stuffing out. As I approach her, she looks at me in alarm and tries to grab all the stuffing she has out in her mouth so she can run away. Silly doggie!

Hey, here is a link to thier pic. and info at Petsmart.com: http://www.petsmart.com/dog/shopping/toys/plush%5F%5F%5Ffleece/products/product%5F29686.shtml
They have more than the frog and duck, they have a bear, bones, a mallard, and I think a few more! I believe these are the only ones showed online though!

Cute! There is no way I could give those to Nala, though. She would spend her life pulling the fuzz off them and ripping arms and legs off. Besides, they look too much like children's toys.

Yeah, that tends to be the first thing Ranger does too! He rips of the hair on top of the head, then the black tag, then he just plays fetch and tug-of-war with his sister when she visits!

Oh, hair and tags also go first with us. But she would actually pull all of that tiny fuzz off, all over their bodies. She's very persistent!

Jamiya
(LOL! Was just looking at the picture of Duke with the tennis ball again. I'm so glad Nala doesn't slobber on her toys!)
