Hi! I got a little off track with the topic of shots for puppies, but I would still like to know if anyone does thier own grooming? I'm thinking of purchasing a book, and doing it myself. It is so expensive here! $54.00 without the tip....That's nuts!!!! Susan

I have a Shi tzu

Oooo, a shih tzu! (going off topic....)

Are they very barky? Someday, in many many years when I am free to choose another pet, I will get a shih tzu or a shih-a-poo or yorki-poo or something. I keep looking into them so when the time comes I will know which type of dog I want.

As for grooming, can't help you much there. I would think you could learn if you were determined and not afraid of a few bad haircuts. My sister learned how to cut her son's hair to save money, and I know she trims her Golden to some extent.

Maybe you could learn and then start a part-time business where people bring their dogs to your house and you groom them and charge less than $54.

I think that everyone who purchases a dog that needs to be groomed regularly should learn how to do it themselves. Unless they are rich and have no qualms about throwing money away AND TIP THE GROOMER. I used to groom =D Anyways...a shihtzu groom at somewhere like Petco should cost somewhere between 30 and 40 dollars. The place you went to is a little high unless your dog is outrageously matted.

I groom my own dog....I have a poodle and thats one of the most difficult dogs to groom. It is much better to have a few shabby haircuts as you learn how to groom than to be shelling out that much money all the time. Invest in a good pair of clippers (expect to pay 80 to 100 bucks for a decent pair) and a book that talks about grooming. Its really very easy. The first time I groomed my poodle I was so nervous and it took me like 6 hours. The second time....3 hours...the third time....closer to 1....each time her haircut looked better and better. Every now and then I have a friend groom her for me if I'm feeling lazy and need her to look tip top.

I would highly recommend getting clippers and learning yourself. Then you can groom your dog as often as you want and keep him looking beautiful all the time instead of stretching it and seeing how long you can go while your dog looks shabby in between groom appts.

(And if you do just have him groomed....tip the groomer. Your dog might be nice at home but most dogs take on completey different personalities at the groomers office. They work hard for the little money they make)

Hello i bath and brush sebastain and jasmine (yorkies) but i take them in to get their nails cut i'm scared to do that. Jasmine is a little sissy girl and doesn't like to be brushed so most of the time i cant get her knots out so i take her to the groomer and get her a puppy cut. but i brush their teeth and clean their ears once a week also. I also bath and brush nala my rotty my self and my 2 cats i brush

Hi Jamiya, We did have a problem with him barking, but I don't know what my husband did! we don't have that problem any more. One good thing about Freebie, is that! he's very smart! he learned everything quick. I had no idea Shi tzu's were that smart. I got him from my sister, who has his Parents. They don't do a thing! Sit, stay, NOTHING..so I thought I had a dumb dog on my hands..(not to be mean) but he's not at all! She just didn't teach her dogs anything...Hope you have the pleasure someday of having one, he's the sweetest! Susan

I am a do it your selfer groomer. I've been clipping my poodles coat for 3 years now. Just got a new Arco clipper set by Wahl. It has two rechargable batteries. I love it. It is so woth it to do it yourself. you save so much money. They have some great grooming books at www.petedge.com I have the poodle grooming one by Shirlee Kalstone. It does take time to learn and after awhile you won't want anyone else to do the job.
