Puppies sleep A LOT. They sleep all night..and take lots of naps. As for potty training...the best thing to do is learn WHEN he is going to go potty. Every time he wakes up....a few minutes after he eats...drinks a lot of water....those are the times when he really has to go. Take him outside or to his place immediately and praise/reward him when he does go. I have a puppy as well that I am crate training. There has only been one accident and I look at that accident as my fault as I was not paying attention and should have known that he needed to go out. ONLY punish him if you catch him in the act. Dogs forget immediately after they do something what they did. Hope that helps.

Puppies sleep all of the time. When my dog Megan was a puppy, she would sleep for hours.

After a puppy eats, plays, or sleeps are times you should take him out. Ask him "Want to go outside?" or something similar so he learns what that means. Take him out (if you want him to primarily use a particular place, this is the time to decide on that). When he is IN THE PROCESS of "going" praise him (but don't be TOO excited or he will stop going). I also use a command word at this point, like "Go potty! GOOD potty!" Now Nala knows what "go potty" means. Some people use "hurry up" or some other thing. I didn't want to tell my kids to hurry up and have the dog pee on the floor, so I chose different words.

Anyway, after he goes, praise him and give him treats. A lot of times, a dog will go a couple of times before they are done. If he doesn't go at all in a reasonable amount of time (like 5 minutes), bring him back inside and watch him closely or put him in a crate (not too big - just enough room to turn around and lie down). In 10-20 minutes take him back outside (repeating all the steps). Keep doing this until he goes - then you are probably safe for an hour or so.

Take him at LEAST every hour to begin with, plus after eating, drinking, sleeping, or playing. You can slowly start to spread the time out as he becomes more reliable and you are better at seeing his signals. Hopefully he will begin to go to the door or ask you in some other way to go outside when he needs to, but this is a while coming.

Dogs like to "go" on a certain surface. If he gets used to always going on grass, that will be his preferred surface. The same thing goes for carpet. Therefore, you want to minimize accidents. Make sure he is always in sight (tether him to you with a leash or gate him into the room with you) or crate him when you can't watch him so he doesn't have many opportunities to make a mistake.

Only scold if you catch him IN THE ACT. Then make a startling noise (yell or clap your hands) which hopefully will startle him into stopping midstream. Pick him up and take him IMMEDIATELY outside, going through the whole rigamarole. If he has an accident when you weren't looking, just clean it up.

If he does have an accident, make sure you use a special cleaner designed to neutralize urine odors - Nature's Miracle is one such product and can be found in pet stores.

A good rule of thumb is that a puppy can "hold it" for approximately their age in months plus one - so a 3-month-old puppy should be able to hold it for about 4 hours.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Thank you again for all your help I will be sure to do all these things. But one last question or questions per say. When I first got my puppy he had worms. But not to many after giving him worm pills in his food daily they went away untill this morning when he used the bathroom there were more worms . This was before I ran out of worm pills and did nothing diffrently. Does the worm pills not work, did he eat something he wasnt suppose to, or does he need to be checked? Also is it good to feed a dog human bones or food because he seems not to like his food very much and I was told not to feed him can food because his stool would be runny. Thanks

it takes a while to get rid of them. Possibly he's still passing them. I would give him another dose (as advised dosage by your vet) and monitor him for awhile.

I womed my puppies all at 4 wks, 10 days later and then another 10 days later, and advised the new pup "parents" (as the vet asdvised me) to wormed them again every month until they were 2 yrs old. Then they could go to stronger wormers and have a 2 X a year worming.
