I put a message up a bit back about Duke (the two year-old Lab) possibly ingesting hair and spitting up at night. Last night he had two episodes, one about 3:00am and another just before 6:00. In both cases I first thought he was trying to bark in his sleep but then it escallated into full blown hacking and finally a big gag where he would spit up a tiny bit of mucus. Then while getting dressed I heard him sort of coughing deep in his chest. He's going to his Vet this afternoon because now I'm sure something is not right with his respiratory system. Hopefully his Vet will find the problem. His bordatella vaccine is current so I don;t think it could be kennel cough but I have never had a dog experience that illness. Any ideas?

Hve you had him checked for heart worms??? I know Abby coughed and choked and spit up mucus...now she's on treatment, and she does it less frequently and the vet said she would quit when they were gone.

My dog did this. I took her to the vet and they said that she has ulcers. The vet also told me that some dogs do this if their stomach is empty, so you should feed them at least twice a day (if you don't already do so).

Samsintentions, Duke was heartworm free at his last check-up and is on Sentinel monthly. I will ask the vet to re-check if he doesn't find anything wrong with his respiratory system.
elizavixen, Duke does get fed twice a day and his appetite has not been affected by this problem so far, however I will ask the Vet about Ulcers. Thanks to both of you for the advice.

FYI. The Vet checked Duke over and only found what could be called a mild sore throat just at the back of his throat. Nothing wrong with lungs or heart and no fever to indicate anything more serious. He gave Duke a shot of antihistimine and some antibiotics to take for a few days. Duke did not have a coughing episode last night so I believe the medication is working.

DUKESDAD, I posted yesterday, but my message is not there so here it goes again. Glad to hear if the antihistimaine is working.
Jake my lab has had something similar going on for most of his 6 /12 years. It would happen especially if he got excited. He would get this gagging like something was caught in the back of his throat and he would try to clear it. They x rayed him, put him on antihistamines, (made him so lethargic) and then said they thought it was acid reflux, so they put him on zantac. The were really at a loss, Finally he did it at the vet and that is how the vet came up with with the acid reflux, but they said they hadnt seen htis type of sympton before I really think it may have been a food allergy, causing the acid reflux because he has had very few episodes since I began experimenting and changing his food over the last 8 months.

Hi! my sisters little yorkypoo does that when he gets excited. They took him to the vet, and he said it was (I can't think of what it's called but, you know when you get excited about something and you gasp? well it's the same thing, except reversed. He pushes air out, instead of in) this causes him to choke. There was nothing that could be done. But he's o.k. it just scares you when he does it.....He always does it when he see's me! He loves me! I know I probably didn't help much, sorry! Susan

Jake would also do it when he wasnt excited, but it happened the most when he was, I wish that wall all it was, he would lbe just lying on the floor then get this uncotrollable gagging fit. I have hated to see him suffer like this. Poor Jake it almost like he got a bone or something stuck in his throat
