i have a 15 wk old puppy that has been so energetic and playful until just recently. He started having diarrhea for a couple of days...now he's vomiting. He tried to get up and play and wags his tail. He drinks water and is making a valiant effort to eat. Most of the time in the last 24 hrs he lays around alot. Im worried about him and am not sure what to do? Does anyone know if this sounds like parvo?

badfish,
parvo would be diarrhea with blood, but whether it is parvo or not, you need to take the baby to the vet ASAP!!! If it is parvo, the sooner you get the puppy to the vet, the better the chances of survival, if it's not parvo, you still want to determine the cause of it and get the puppy treated , because dihadration can be as dangerous as any other serious desease.

HI There,
Not all dogs have diarrhea with blood in it if they are suffering from parvo.
You need to have your dog checked ASAP as puppies can become ill very quickly and the sooner treatment is started the better for your puppy it will be.

Also Has your pup had all his vaccinations if so how long after the last one did you wait before taking him for walks or introducing him to other dogs.

People can pick the virus up on there clothes or shoes just by coming into contact with contaminated places or dogs.

This may not even be parvo but just an infection but its safer to have him checked.
please keep us posted of his progress.

Mike.

A parvo test is just 30 dollars. Trust me...go to the vet and get it done.

hi everyone....well i took dakota in and well he has parvo. They gave him some shots....and sent him home with some antibots....im giving him water, gatorade and broth. So far he is drinking on his own...i have only had to syringe feed him once. Doc says he's not dehydrated yet...and the fact that he is drinking on his own is a good sign...but also told me to be prepared in case things take a turn for the worse. I love this dog so much......he is so good with my baby and protective and OMG.....lovable. Ill just die if he doesnt make it. Say a prayer for Dakota....he could use everyones help. thanks

also failed to mention....doc said the lady that gave me dakota had to have lied to be about giving him his first two sets of shots otherwize he wouldnt have it. I am so angry at her because she is a dog breeder for the okc, ok police dept. and if she would lie to me will she lie to anyone else. What a terrible person she is....like i would have cared if he hadnt had his shots....at least i would have taken him and started him on them so we dont have to face losing him all together

I will be praying for your puppy! I hope he pulls through this. I'm so sorry! I know it's hard to deal with. I used to have two puppies with parvo, one made it, one did not. But since you got him to the vet and started on meds, hopefully that will do it. Just keep a close eye on him, and make sure he drinks enough fluids. I too! would be very upset with that "so-called" breeder...I hope you let her know what this has cost you! emotionally and financialy..Good luck! and keep us posted....Sincerely, Susan

I believe it is quite possible for a pup to get parvo even when he has had some of his shots. They are not fully protected until ALL of the puppy shots are received, and I think the last set is around 16 weeks (someone correct me if I am remembering incorrectly). Our current vet likes to give 4 shots instead of 3, but some only do 3 and we have never had a problem either way.

I don't know if they can still get it even after all the shots. Anyone else know?

I'm so sorry about Dakota and he will be in my thoughts. Please keep us updated on how he is doing!

Hi Vaccinations should be given at 8wks 10wks and 12wks after the 3rd vaccination the puppy should not be allowed contact with any other dogs or allowed to walk anywhere dogs have been until 2-3 weeks after the last shot.

It has been known for puppies to contract the parvo virus even after they have had shots it has also been known for a dog that has not had its shots to come into contact with another dog that has the virus yet not contract it but becomes a carrier of the virus.

Dogs or puppys that contract the virus usually make a full recovry once treatment has been started.

My thoughts are with you and dakota hope he recovers soon.

well thank you all for your concern. This morning Dakota seems to be doing alot better. Although I know he is not out of danger yet. Doc said they can start to show signs of improvement and still take a turn for the worse. I just hope that his playfullness is continous. Keep your fingers crossed. And thanks for the info.

BadFish, I don't mean to scare you,
but one of my puppies had all of her shots, at 3 wks, 6 wks. 10 wks...she still got parvo.

The lady could have been telling the truth, then again maybe not. YOur lucky you caught this early.

In my prayers.

He has parvo...and they sent him HOME??? I'm no parvo expert but everytime someone had parvo at the vet I used to work at....they stayed in our iso room for quite awhile. I heard treatment for it is also incredibly expensive.

Well i have heard alot of controversy as to how parvo should be treated. The doc said that they are not there to make money....he just wants to help the pet. He asked me if i wanted to leave him there....because he wasnt aware that i am a at home mom...plus my mom used to be a vets asst. He basically said that if i was going to be with him solid for the next 72 hrs that there wasnt anything they could do differntly that i could do on my own. He gave him all the meds he would need, which consisted of two different shots and then sent us home with some antibots. From there he told me to give him 5cc's of liquid (water, gatorade, broth) for the next 24 hours and once he started holding the fluids down start giving him the soft noodles from the soup. Then after 72 hours noodles and nutrical vitamin supplement. Im also a mother of 3 boys so im very used to having to play doctor at home. Needless to say I didnt get to sleep last night and im very exhasted, but Dakota is worth every bit of it. As soon as he's better, hopefully 100% ill get a pic up so you guys can see why im going through all the trouble of nursing him myself. Plus after hours if i have any complications, i call my mom. Shes a big help, just wish she wasnt 6 hrs away. Dakota seems to be doing well though. He's up and playing and so desperately wants out of isolation. I let him out for a couple of minutes to see the kids...so he wouldnt forget what he was fighting for. He loves his boys. Ill keep everyone posted.

well i have some awesome news. Dakota is doing great. He seems to be making a full recovery. This morning when i woke up he was sitting on my bed wagging his tail and wanting to play. He running around and visiting with my 11 month old baby that he has layed claim to since the day we brought him home. I think he thinks the baby is his. LOL! He was so happy to see him. He looks like he has put a little weight back on and holding all of his food down. So today he eats noodles from soup and then on to soup and nutrical. Im so glad he survived. I have lost a pup to this before and my 11 yr old was devastated when he found him dead. Thanks for all of your concern. Its good to know there are ppl out there that are decent...heck decent enough to even care about someone they have never met and their pet. God bless you all! Tina

Woohoo! That is great news! What kind of a dog is he?

And what is it about 11-year-olds finding dead pets? I swear my son has heralded almost every pet disaster we had last year.

well we arent exactly sure what he is....doc seems to think he is yellow lab/possibly boxer or pitt mix but he said more 3/4 lab and 1/4 of whatever else. He is just a beautiful dog. So sweet. Yeah my son has had his fair share of disasters...his first dog was a vizsla and she was awesome....then one day while we were at my dads...she happened upon a rattle snake nest. Four bites later and alot of tears she gave up her fight about 12 hrs into. That just about destroyed him.

The really bad thing abopit Ohio Breeders is their are no laws there to protect you. in NY state if a breeder has given shots They have to show proof from the vet.Or if they lie the law is on your side if your puppy dies from parvio and the vet states it is impossible for the pup to have picked it up after he left the breeders home. It does seem to be a big problem in Ohoi for the last two years a constant outbreak.I have a few puppies that the owners drove up here to get the puppy from me instead one on the other side of Cleveland and one on the airforce base. Hope your boy pulls through OK
