I know a lot of you out there already know what IAMS does. For those of you who don't and feed your pets IAMS, please click on the link below and see if you still want to support Proctor and Gamble. This company doesn't just conduct tests with pet food, they also kill so many animals (dogs, cats included) in their lab test (which are not required by law) in their other thousands of products. I boycott all of their products. [This message has been edited by Chessmind (edited 01-04-2004).] IP: Logged |

I am trying to boycott not just IAMS but all of their other companies. I don't know all of the companies they own, but I do know that they own Eukanuba. IP: Logged |

It will usually say on the package : Procter and Gamble. They just make so many products that you really have to check the labels. Procter and Gamble kills 50,000 animals a year in all their lab tests (which are not required by law) and the ones that survive have an aweful life. IP: Logged |

Here is how I determine if a food is good or bad with very little effort. Type the brand name of the food and the word "boycott" into Google. If oodles of sites appear as the search result....its BAD!!! Seriously tho....its crappy food and a bad company for MORE ways than just what was mentioned. How about the time they changed their recipe and didnt put it on their labeling for 6 months because the law says they dont have to update it right away. A lot of dogs all of a sudden had reactions to the new ingredients which I can only guess....were cheaper seeing how Eukanubas price dropped from being an expensive brand to the same price range as the rest of the food on the shelf. Go Trader Joes brand! And if you dont have that....so far the best brand ive found was Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice. Not as good or as cheap as TJ's but better than lots of the crap thats out there. Nothing bothers me more to see people buying that Walmart Ol Roy crap. Those people are just disrespectful to their pets. IP: Logged |

I've never heard of this "Trader Joes". I need a high protien dog food, that is going to fulfil my dogs needs. They are extremely active, and I mean EXTREMELY. They work cattle most daily, and after, they hunt (well atleast they pretend to, half the time they chase their own trails!!). I'm serious, just when you think they are going to flop over dead of exhaustion...they hit another gear, and go faster!!! I usually go through a 50lb bad a week and a half.....I don't want to spend more than $15-20....I usually end up feeding it to the rescues and dumpees as well untill they find a home. I"m feeding Purina and Pedigree now...I think the Purina is $17 - 50lbs, and Pedigree is like $14 something a 50lb bag... IP: Logged |

Sam, the way I understand it, when your dogs burn that much energy they need more calories and more carbs not more protein. My vet told me to quit feeding Dooley such a high protein food and simply give him more of a lower protein food. (his food had 34% protein) I don't know enough to speak intelligently on the topic, but I think that a dog can only process so much protein and too much can cause problems...I have the feeling a good person to ask may be nern, I've noticed she seems to be the person to soak up info about nutrition from =). I did a quick search and found some good stuff to read on the topic of protein, some of the info conflicts, but what I am getting so far is that not all protein is equal. It also depends on the dog, Dooley is very very lean, athletic lean not skinny, Witt is a tank and would put weight on more easily I think. I think in life too much or too little of most things can be bad when talking food. I'll keep reading and pass along what i find, but so far it sounds like there is some controversy. http://www.burns-pet-nutrition.com/basicnutrition.html http://home.yebo.co.za/~mcewendp/health%20Basic%20right%20food.htm http://www.thepetcenter.com/imtop/protein.html IP: Logged |
