My puppy seems to be constipated. She grunts and moans and when it appears that she is trying to defecate, her tail curls up under her. When i rub her stomach i hear what sounds like cramping and gas. How can i help her? Is there any home remedy i can try, i have heard of swabbing the anal area with a swab but what if this doesn't stimulate her to defecate? Can i help her before i have to go to the vet? Please Help.

How long has it been since your pup had a bowel movement? How old is the pup? Is it possible that she/he was fed or got a hold of any bones? It's important to determine the cause of the constipation. What food are you feeding?
You could try giving the pup 1/2 tablespoon of mineral oil (not more than once a day) or try giving milk which has a laxative effect. Pumkin, squash or celery can soften stools as well. I am NOT a vet, you should seek the advice of your vet, even if by phone to ask if giving your pup the oil or milk is a good idea.
If your pup has an impaction you will need to see a vet.
Gas can be caused by the food they eat and sometimes just changing the food will help. Adding a tablespoon of yogurt or cultured buttermilk to the kibble can also help.
Just some ideas ..hope it helps.

My pup was around 5 weeks old, She was the runt out of 12 pups. She passed away this evening due to what we think was worms. I talked to someone very experienced about the situation and she told me to get some worm medicine (i was told earlier from the vet's office not to worm the pups till 6 weeks of age) and the lady told me to get a liquid wormer for pups and dogs. I rushed and got the medicine and it was just to late, she responded somewhat to the medicine but she was so small. I done everything i could for her. She was precious and loved and will be deeply missed but i leave it in God's hands, she is in a better place. I would like to thank everyone for their replies to my previous post. I appreciate it. God Bless.
