Okay, I am not really, But I am going to rant as this kind of stuff upsets me, but I just found a dog running down a road close to mine (a fairly busy rural road and I almost hit it). So I put the dog in the car, such a sweet thing and she is only wearing a rabies tag, (I was on my way back to work when this happened) so I went back to my house and called the vet, she gave me the owners # so I called but only got a recording, left a message and put the dog in my car to go to work. I would have left her at home but not with my 3 dogs and cat alone. When O got to work I had a message from the woman and she said she didnt own the dog any more but would a hold of the current owner, which she did. The man came to my office and jokingly called me a dognapper and she was probably just following me when I left for work. Well my anger is
(1) no id tags
(2) people where I live think they can just let their dogs roam free because they live in the country.

My one neighbor hasnt threatened to take another neighbors dog away for letting it run loose because he has seen to many dogs hit on our road

I just dont understand people. I thought I was doing a good deed.

I have actually kidnapped a dog..probably technically called stealing. I watched the dog starve, go without water, bake in the heat of a hot summer with no shelter or shade, I watched him get ignored and the attention he did get was being yelled at. I complained to animal control, tried talking to the owner and finally one night (several years ago) we were in the midst of an ice storm, everything was encased in ice and I noticed the dogs chain was wrapped around the tree he was tied to and frozen to it. It was just the last straw for me. I took my dog home and came back. I simply jumped the fence and took the dog. I went home and gave him a warm bath, fed him and made him a bed in my living room. The next day I called a friend who had recently lost her elderly dog and told her the story. She took him in and he has been a loved and valued family member since. During that next summer we had a garage sale and that particular neighbor came strolling up, he looked through stuff for a bit and finally approached me, he said hello and we exchanged pleasantries, he finally said to me "you know my dog disappeared?" I said yes I had noticed. He said " I wondered if you had anything to do with that?" I said I did. I was thinking here we go now the cruds going to hit the fan!.....but he surprised me and asked if the dog was in a good home. I told him that he was. He nodded and thanked me. He told me he knew that it was for the best and explained that he had been doing drugs and going through a divorce. He said he knew that wasn't an excuse but he wanted me to know. What I did may have been wrong and is certainly illegal, but I am not sorry, and I would do it again.
Honeybear I hope you told that man that he needed to contain his dog and get some ID on him...you did a good thing, went out of your way and you had the right to lecture in that instance.

Maisey, I did tell him he needed to get tags on especially since he only lived down the street from me and look what I had to go thru to find him,and I pointed out the inconvenience of him having to come to my office to get the dog. some people are clueless. I am so glad you you were able to get that dog and then to have the man thank you in the end. I had a similar situation a few years ago unfortunately I wasnt able to get to the 100# lab locked in the backyard, if there was any I could have gotten him over the fence I would have, I spoke to the man about the way his dog was being treated and he was so mean to me, I just dont understand people. I feel if I can do my good deeds even though the other people dont appreciate it makes me feel better

You're not the only one hon. DO NOT feel bad. ANY dog roaming free anywhere is the result of neglect and or carelessness. My dog got out once. My own fault and it was my carelessness that left the gate open and forgot she was outside. She had all ID tags on and was returned to me. All you people with microchips be CAREFUL. A local shelter in vegas recently got in trouble as two microchipped cats were NOT scanned even tho the shelter had working chip scanners and they were placed up for adoption within 24 hours that the shelter received them. So when the poor woman came looking for her cat...she learned one of them had been ADOPTED.

Anyways....I've done the same thing. Little dog was running around loose in my neighborhood for days so I started feeding it and eventually took it in my house as it was cold at night. I turned it over to animal control so that the owner had to pay massive fees to get the animal returned to them. I hope they learned their lesson.

By law that is what we are supposed to do around here, because that is the first place the owner will look. I don't feel bad for bringing them there. These people that have there dogs get out may think alittle harder about keeping them contained if they have to pay a fine. Someday that person could be me. I only pray my dogs would be brought to the shelter instead of risk getting hit. Maisey I am so glad you saved that dogs life, Bravo. And good job for you too Honeybear.

Maisey I just have to reply to your note on dog stealing. I'm thankful that that man was honest with you about his drug use and how he appreciated the dog getting a good home. people deserve a second chance, just like dogs do. He sounds like a man that took the wrong road, but it's never too late to take the right one. I'm not saying that he should have the dog back, I'm just saying people need love too....What you did was the right thing to do under the cicumstances. I would have done the same! But i admire his courage, to confront you instead of being too ashamed to say anything about it. I wish him well as well as that "now loved" dog. Sincerely, Susan

She was returned to me tonight thankfully =) The family who had her kept her all day long with no phone call which was quite disconcerting...but she was returned in one healthy piece tonight so at least THAT episode is all better. Now to just continue worrying about the other dog that swallowed the toy =P

HoneyBear - Maisey!!! Don't yall dear feel bad about the actions you took. Yall are heros in my eyes.

Think of it this way, those dogs are dead to the people who let that happen to them.
You called the vet, the woman called you and said it wasn't hers, more than likely it was, but she was too embarassed or didn't want her anymore.

I've done the same thing. I took a horse that was tied to the side of the road, on a tree, some one left her there to starve, she had no food, water, nothing.
Couldn't even let her head down to nibble on what little grass there was. On the Heneke scale she was a 2.

I watched her for 2 days and when I saw no one come to her or tend to her, I thought they abandoned her. So she's in a happy home, fat and healthy.
I looked for the owners, no one would fess up, because they would have been charged for animal cruelty and abandonment.

Keep it up. Not everyone takes care of their animals like we do. Some abuse and neglect.
Thats why I let it be known that anyone can drop their animals off at my place and I'll do my best to medicate and find them homes.
Of course at the moemnt my funds are being limited, and I'm having to sacrifice shoping and going out to make up for the extra cash. My animals live much much much better than I do. Never have an illness, never have an empty tummy.

Thank yall for being great to your animals.

oh Maisey dont feel bad at all!! God bless you for taking that puppy in. I do think its great that both of you confronted each other about what happened. Hopefully he has learned from his past so it isnt repeated in the future. At the vets office I work at there are a few houses behind. One night when we were taking out the trash we found a dog frozen to the ground in one of the peoples yards. Thankfully he was still alive. We had to take a heat lamp and a snuggle safe to get him out. The owners were out of town and came looking for him while he was still recovering with us. It was a nasty situation but I am thankful that the Dr. stuck to his guns and would not allow him to go back. He now lives with one of the girls that works there.
Tags are such a necessasity. We had to go out of town unexpectedly due to a family emergency. I could only get the pet sitter for one visit a day so my dogs went to stay with a friend while the pet sitter took care of the cats. Well Chopper nosed the gate open at her house and we recieved a frantic phone call from our friend only 45 minutes after we left. I was frantic! Thankfully an hour later we recieved a phone call from a couple who had found him. They said, well we were going to give you a couple hours to return our phone call and then we were going to keep him!!!
Thankfully they called before we got much further out of our cell range or we would have never known that they were trying to call!
Chopper is microchipped but I dont know many people who run around carrying a scanner where ever they go.

maydays mom, hopfully those people were just joking about keeping your dog, but I do have friends that lost their dog and it had been a week - not sure if it had tags on or not, but they plastered signs everywhere, their girls were in their local park where signs were also posted and low and behold they see a little girl walking their dog. I am sure they saw the signs but decided to keep it. And those people who left their dog out in frozen weather like that were lucky they didnt have abuse charges against them. thank god the dog now has a loving home
