Over the summer my father brought home a Bichon Frise that his friend had talked him into buying. His friend had gotten one and persuaded my father into purchasing puppy's brother. Things were fine and our dog is completely spoiled, but when I heard from my father what happened to the other one it almost made me cry.

He told me that the other one was left in the backyard and was all dirty and its coat was almost all matted. Not to mention it had weird cuts in certain places because the owner's son decided to give the dog a haircut. The poor things (he has two of them now) sleep in the backyard and aren't ever let inside the house.

Bichon Frise are house dogs right? Shouldn't they be kept inside? Well anyway I was also told that the dogs felt like skin and bones.

Apparently my father's friend only bought them in the first place so they can breed enabling him to make alot of money. I just wish I could help the dogs somehow. Blah.

Awe, those poor dogs!
Can't you make an anonymous call to animal control?

Would your father be okay with you calling? If so, maybe he can give you the address or maybe he can make the call and at least have animal control check up on the dogs.

Your father can take photos of the dogs, you can make anonymous complaints to animal control. Each one has it's own laws depending on where you are so what may be lawful in one area may not be in another. Unfortunately in many places if the dogs have food and water and are contained thats all that is required. Even when that is absent some shelters have very little funding or space and still don't act in neglect cases. Your father should find out what the laws are...if the person is violating any of them, complaints should be made. The squeeky wheel gets the oil is the truth in these matters...complaining once is generally not going to get action.
I know it is a touchy situaution, but perhaps this man just simply doesn't know any better and being educated is what he needs. It is beyond me how anyone could be so ignorant as to not understand simple things like a dog should be kept fed and watered so i tend to assume the worst, but maybe some careful words of advice could help.

Yeah...only problem is that the guy is my dad's friend. So he doesn't want to report him.

Hi! As "A friend" couldn't or would your dad talk to him about the proper care of animals? I would think that if he's a friend, he should be able to dicuss his concerns for the poor dog. And if this man want's to Breed this dog, most buyers are going to want to see the parents. That alone should concern him, I would think...

Keep talking to your dad about it, maybe he will do something if it's upsetting you.
I'm so sorry to hear this! it sounds like it's realy upsetting you! Good luck! Hope things get better....Sincerely, Susan

This is aweful. Bichons are so beautiful, not sure what they are bred for but no dog should have to be out in the cold day after day. If your father is his friend then he should have a matter of factly talk with him. Tell your dad to tell him that people are talking about reporting him if he does not start taking care of them. Oh, this makes me mad. Thankfully your father knows how to care for a dog.

Yeah, my father asked him a bunch of questions, asking why he didn't give them bathes and why they were outside and such.
ANd yes...I'm going to keep talking to him about it. If I could I would even take in those two dogs, sadly my house is too small.

Yes, bichons are supposed to be house dogs. And, if the two he bought are brother and sister, and he intends to breed them, you should warn him that there may be defects in the puppies. I believe that part of the reason they are bred is because people otherwise allergic to dogs can be around them and have no allergic reaction, or something like that, which is why my friends got one. I hope you get everything straigtened out! Those poor dogs!

What about taking the dog in just for a few days and giving it to Bischon rescue? Or having a friend take care of it til you can find a suitable home? Anywhere has to be better than where it is at the moment. Good luck talking to your dad. I hope something happens soon.

Thats sad. A friend wouldn't let another friend harm an animal. If they are such good friends then they should be able to take advice and critisim from each other. Your father should have the guts to say something.

Have a talk with him and tell him that if he's truely a friend and cares for the dogs, he'd say soemthing about it to him.

Why don't you trya nd get the dogs from him? Maybe offer to buy them or something?

Believe me you can call without your father knowing. I know from experience that if you don't say anything and just complain about how awful it is, if something happens to those dogs the guilt you will feel. I knew someone who was not giving their dog the best care and treatment and I often complained to my mother but said nothing to the proper people now the dog is dead and I feel like a jerk for not saying anything before. I cried for almost a week over that dog. Do something you will feel much better. remember animals are living souls and they have feelings and hurt just like we do. What't the worst that can happen animal control can take the dogs, put them up for adoption and tell him he can't have anymore dogs. And that sounds great to me. Those dogs probably haven't even seen a vet. Poor things. And if he has them staked in the yard it could have been any one that calls. You may even be able to email them.

Glorificus, I don't know how old you are, and this may be overwhelming to you. But the people here love dogs! just like it sounds that you do. That's why we get so "frusterated" for lack of a better word....but it sounds like you are doing all you know to do. I truley hope that your dad will be able to talk some since into that ****. Good Luck! Susan

My parents are now telling me that it's probably not that bad. I guess they don't want me to bother them about it. Although I have been asking my dad to bring the dogs over so we can take care of them for a few days, he's fine with that, but now we have to get my mom to agree.

Tuttifruiti: LOL what I meant was I don't know what the main purpose of the bichon was intended to be, hunting vermon, etc. I did at least know what you mentioned. It seems most people just buy a dog becuase they love the way their whole persona is and don't do the intended use for them, which is fine with me. You what I mean like beagles and hounds hunt foxes. That sort of thing.

Glorificus: Keep at your father and if you can gather up enough braveness approach the man yourself. Bring brochures straight from the shelter or online so you have something to back yourself up.
