I got 2 cockatiel's for Christmas and my dog is just so terrible with them,I'am afraid he is wanting to eat them. he is a rott, chow,Shepard mix, and my other is a red bone hound. she could care less about them, but my rott, mix sleeps under their cage, when the move he bounces all over the room and tries to get up on my desk to get to them.he ciries and whines when he cant reach them, he does this when I talk to them. I dont know what to do. he likes to chase the wild birds that are in the sky. he cant ever catch them. my house taught him that. but the other small wild birds that land in the yard I have never seen him run after them. so I need to know what to do about him and my birds. is this something natural for the dogs to do? does he feel like they are intruding? he dont even sleep on the bed any more, YEAAA HAWWW.he sleeps under their cage. the cage is up in the air, where nothing can get to them but us.hes a really great dog, he loves everyone. and plays well with the other dog.I give all my animals the same amount of attention.I have s scheduel that is followed with my dogs, they know when I come home from work,I drop my purse and brief case and its play time with me and when its bed time. I'm afraid he wants to eat my birds. I would be really upset if that happend and so would my son as he got them for me for Christmas, and hes 13 yrs old. so if anyone has any Idea what to do, or how to disipline him. PLEASE let me know. I want to be safe rather then sorry. right now he is sleeping on the floor under their cage while I type, but just now when I said hello he got right up, and is running around like he had wayyyyy to many sweets. Please any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have three dogs and a cage with rats...My Catahoula bays them in their cage on a regular basis. We tell him "enough" and "leave it" and he does. Dooley our Aussie mix is curious about them and likes to look at them, but if you take them out of the cage he is terrified of them. Darby, my Poodle ignores them unless they are out of the cage...then he gets so excited he liuterally shakes, I know he would in an instant kill them. I think my pup would "play with them to death". He gets very excited by them as you described your dog doing. I woulod not leave him in the same room alone with the birds even when in the cage. I would also put him in another room when you play with the birds. I introduced my dogs to the rats...but I can hold onto the rat and protect it...I don't know how you could do that with a bird and be safe. I found that once I introduced them they were less interested. You just got them and they are new to the house...give him some time and perhaps they will become old news and he will become less obsessed with them.

Be careful!! Your birds may become a snack. I would definately go with her advice. Put them or the dog in another rooom when playing with the birds, and don't leave them unattended.

I totally understand!! I had the same problem in March. I got a Parakeet that I named Periwinkle because he was light blue. I thought that my Cocker Megan would be fine with him, but I was wrong. I had Periwinkle on the table in the living room and Megan would run and jump at the cage. She did this for about 6 days. Megan hurts her leg a lot when she jumps up (like when she chases squirrels) so I decided that Periwinkle had to go back to the pet store. It was really sad and I felt bad about periwinkle. It was a hard decision, but I knew that Periwinkle would become a snack if Megan ever got near her. It was also best for Megan so that she doesn't hurt her leg anymore, and it was best for us to not have to watch Megan 24/7 to keep her away from Periwinkle. I hope that this helps you, Good Luck!!!

Aww thats so sad. my dog is a rott, chow, shepard mix and he is a medium size dog. I have the cage up in the air on a closet hook that he can not reach the birds. I have gotten attaced to them so I dont want to take them back. as my son would be so hurt. he gave them to me for Christmas. so I keep a bottle of Adams Flea spray by my desk and when he comes near the cage I grab it.although he cant reach it, I still feel that he wants to eat them, and with him trying to eat the feathers that fall to the floor I'm pretty sure that is what it means. I dont know what else to do with him.But I hope that he will soon one day learn they are not a snack. I dont want to spank him,I keep him out side when I take the birds out of the cage and he gose bannanas.he can hear them talking and chirping. he is jealous. so I also try to give him a lil more attention then normal. I hope that helps. Thankyou for your help. I accept all the help I can get with having birds again.

We have mice, and one of our cats in particular wants to eat them. I don't know about Nala (the dog) because we never gave her the chance. The mice all live in bedrooms and the doors remain shut ALL the time. It messes up the heating and a/c flow in our house, but the mice get to live.
