At about 4:30 Sat am Jake was whining at the door to go out, so I let him out, well after 20 minutes he still wasnt back so I went looking for him, (in 30 degree weather barefoot) he didnt want to come in so I made him. Then I hear the sound of the chirping when a smoke detector battery is going. Then Jake wants out again so I let him out, again he disappears, I find him, he has his tail between his legs, I am thinking something spooked him outside so I make him come in, well he goes bezerk, hiding in the shower so I figure the tone of the smoke detector is driving him crazy, so hear I am dragging a ladder in ( my husband is out of town and I am not a very handy person) I finally yank the thing off, breaking it. Poor Jake was so worked up he hyperventilated for almost 2 hours before he calmed down. Well the next morning, Sunday at 1:30 am, Jake jumps on the bed with me and he is shaking like a leaf, so I think now whats his problem, then I hear a chirp. I am thinking oh no, I get up and it is one going bad in a bedroom, I get the ladder but cant get it removed, so I shut the door but you can still hear it, so I turn on the stereo real loud, by morning it had finally drained and stopped. Because we have a new home, they are in every room. I went out and bought new batteries but my husaband got home late Sunday, and then we had a freak snowstorm and are still without power. at 6:00 am this morning I hear a chirping, Oh no not again - this time it is the backup battery to our alarm, but it has a different pitch so it is not bothering Jake. Because we have no power and our smoke detectors are hard wired, the batteries are for when the power goes out like now I told my husband we need to take out all of the batteries until we get them replaced since they will be working with the power out and I am afraid the rest will be drained and will send poor Jake over the edge if they start chirping while we are not home.
Sorry this is so long but thought it was an interesting story about what these sounds can do to your dog
