My 8 month old miniature schnauzer, Porter, has been sick for over a month now. He started with Diarreah and vomiting, no fever - we took him to the vet right away. Doc found bacteria in his stool, so he gave him a shot and put him on antibiotics for 5 days. While on the antibiotics we gave him the prescribed wet food (i/d science diet), and no treats. He got better, but by the end of the week, he was vomiting and had terrible diarreah (which he could not hold), and no fever... so once again, we took him to the vet where Porter was given another shot to stop the diarreah and avoid dehydration... and was put on a powder antibiotic for 10 days. During the 10 days... I fed him rice, boiled chicken, and broth. I slowly have introduced him to his dry dog food, and he is eating normally. Drinks lots of water... and is extremely hyper! The only problem is that about 3 or 4 days ago... (the last day of his antibiotics) he has started with soft stool (not diarreah), and mucus in the stool. I don't know what to do. I am desperate. I want to go to the vet again, but I feel like I need a second opinion first. Also, the first day he ever got sick, was the first day that Porter got walked by a dog walker, and I can't help but think about the fact that she might be giving him something that makes him sick. I, of course, have asked her to not give him anything... but who knows.
please, please help me!
thanks,
tina

Was your puppy diagnosed with coccidia??? - i know that coccidia can appear to go away then reappear...you have to steralize everything with lysol or ammonia 1 part to 10 parts water. also the bacteria will stay in the ground for a long time - i am not aware of anyway to steralize the ground...

You mentioned that the first day your dog got sick was the day Porter was walked by a hired walker.
Do you know exactly where this walker walked your dog?
Because if he took your Porter to a dog-park/run, it would be there thatis very likly where your Porter might have picked up a virus/disease.
I'm sure you know that dogs of all kinds from all over come in & out of these dog-parks. Alotta contagious things coming in & out of there.
It's pretty easy for a dog to catch a virus.
The walker did'nt even have to bring your dog to a dog-park. Just walking down your block, would/could be hazardous to your dogs well being.
I only recommend dog runs & places where other dogs come in contact w/ each other, and basically just places where a dog could have been, for dogs that have strong Immune Systems.
Sometimes over-supplementing a dogs diet w/ "synthetics" causes nasty stools/diarreah.
Sometimes raw-hide does this too. It can sit in a dogs stomach for quite some time, because some dogs stomachs have a hard time breaking it down.
Sometimes even these flavored chew-type bones (like Grennies, but not Greenies, that stuffs good), sits in their stomach long too when they swallow a large piece. It also causes diarreah & mucus in the stool.

Ask your vet what type of bacteria he found in the stool & how it got there.
Then do some research of your own...

Good-Luck

could be colitis? my dog has lots of tummy troubles and sensitive bowels, and when she eats something bad it sends the bacteria nuts and she gets colitis. the mucusy stools sounds exactly like what she has when she has an episode. her last episode she got put on anti biotics and science diet ultra z/d. that cleared it up and now as prevention we give her a very strict diet of eukanuba, chicken rice or pasta and we give her an acidophillus tablet everyday so theres more good bacteria than bad in her bowels. when she looks like shes about to have another dose of colitis we increase her acidphillus to 2 a day and feed her just chicken and rice. [the fiber in eukanuba would make her poo inside the house if we feed it to her when shes like that] id get the vets to investigate more and if they cant find anything too out of the ordinary then try the same kinda thing im doing for my dog. maybe they need to look inside him if it gets real bad?

This morning Andrew, my boyfriend, walked him at 7 am and Porter's poop was COMPLETELY NORMAL!!!! Thank Goodness! Well- I know it does not mean that he is completely back to normal, yet... but at least, it is a good sign. I will keep him on his current dry dog food, which is the only dry food he loves... (IAMS mini chunks) But I am very interested in the acedophilis you mentioned. Is this the good live bacteria that we get from yogurt? Where do I get these tablets...? what are they called?

As far as the walker- I asked her where she had taken him and she walked around my apt... up and down park avenue... Which is where I walk him. And I asked her to not take him anywhere without my consent. Let's hope that she is as trustworthy as I was told she was!

I will talk to my vet tomorrow... if I see mucus or diarreah again... let's hope not!

thank you all!

porter, you can get acidpholious tablets at drugstores and any healthfood stores, it is the same stuffin yogurt, many Drs prescribe eating yogurt for people with stomach problems. YOu can also get probiotics, which is a little bit stronger than the acidhplisous (poor sp) ALso check pet sotres I know they sell pet versions but can be more expensive. Ask your vet what the dosage should be.
