My dog gave birth to pups in November, they are all healthy and nurse well but my dogs breasts are very 'raw' looking, they are red and when they are nursing i notice a little blood, i can tell the blood is from the sharp claws and the teething pups but i was wondering is there anything i can do to help her with the very raw skin? Could i put Vaseline or lotion or anything else to help this to heal up a little bit?

Wish i had the honor & experiance of taking care of birthing pups, but unfortunatly i've never had.
There should be some people here that would be able to help you out though...
I'd say contact your Vet.
Maybe there are types of creams/lotions that would be ok for the pups to consume while feeding.

Hi! You can use the same thing that Mothers use while nursing thier babies. I can't think of what it's called, but I'm sure you'll find it at any drugstore or even your local market. I asked my vet about the same thing when Casey had her pups, it won't hurt the puppies....Good Luck! Susan

Its very normal. You can try applying some vasalene to them, but not on the actual nipples. Around the nipples where the puppies "kneed" with their paws usually gets the most sore, and the vasaline will help.

If it gets too severe, you can try taking a pillow cover and cutting out holes where her nipples are and placing that over her tummy so the puppies claws dont do so much damage, and this doesn't limit their milk intake.

Have you trimed the puppies claws as well?? Try that, but not too short.

Good luck

Hi, Clipping the puppies claws will help reduce the scratching of her teats they should only be trimmed and care taken not to cut to close to the blood supply if unsure about doing this yourself you can ask a vet to do it or someone that has bred dogs and that will do it for you. You can use baby lotion but not on the teat itself but around it allow this to be absorbed into the skin before allowing the puppies to feed.

You say that the puppies where born in november how old are they ??

If older than 4weeks they should be starting on solids and depend less on there mum.

Feeding them puppy food and giving them puppy substitute milk which you can buy from any vet or petstore will also give mum a break from feeding and also gives her body time to recover.

Puppies need to be fed 5-6 small meals aday until they are about 8weeks old and this can then be changed to 4times a day.

If you would like more help please feel free to email me boro_lad1976@hotmail.com

Hi! just wanted to say that, you should listen to Mike. He gave me great advise when my dog came up pregnant unexpectantly. She and the the pups are doing great now. Good Luck! Susan

P.s. My puppies were born Nov. 15th, Casey only feeds them once, maybe twice a day now. They get Iams puppy bits, a little milk (formula) and water. She has put back almost all the weight that she lost nursing them.

The pups recently just turned 5 weeks old, i have already began feeding them their food, etc. I think i was bit overworried because my dog is like my child to me and i was really concerned about her situation. She is doing alot better. She began to heal up on her own and is doing much better. The pups are weening. I will be making a vet visit next week for the mom and the litter. I would like to thank everyone for their advice. I appreciate it.
