Hi, I brought my dog to the vet 10 days ago because he was shaking his head a lot. She told me they had to put him to sleep to have a better look. The vet called me & said that they found him to have a ruptured ear drum. Gave me anti-inflammatory meds & some anti-biotics. His eye on the same side has discharge too. Some greenish stuff.. The only thing I'm wondering about is why does he have so much exessive fluid discharging from his ear. It smells awful. I tried to clean some of it off of him, but a few seconds after he just has more. This only started after the vet visit. Should I go to a different vet? I could understand a few days after but it's now been 10. Can't call the vet, it's holiday. Can anyone tell me what's going on? IP: Logged |

Did they place a tube in his ear specifically for drainage? The vet should have been open today...but if not call an emergency clinic and explain the circumstances and ask if this is normal. IP: Logged |

Hi Thanks for your response. No I don't think there was a tube. I did get a hold of the vet that looked at him. For some reason she thought that I was putting drops in his ears. I reminded her that she told me that wouldn't be a good idea, since he has a ruptured ear drum. She asked that I bring him back in on Monday to have a second look & to sedate him again to swab a culture from his ear to see if there's any sort of bacteria infection. That would cost another $220.00. I would think that they would've done that the first time they sedated him. So far I spent 336.90 & I'm worst off than when I started to have him looked at. So, I called another vet clinic & explained the circumstances. I'll be bringing him in to them on Monday morning. I hope all is well. It should have stopped draining by now. Or possibly the anti-biotics are not doing it for him and he needs a different kind. Right at this moment my son has a huge bandage on his head becasue he had a ruptured ear drum fixed. After about the thrid time of it rupturing it did not heal. Your dogs probably will, but the infection is not only on the outside of the ear drum its inside and it had built up pressure and broke thru. Very painful. What kind of dog is it? ------------------ IP: Logged |

He's a golden retreiver. He just turned 3. We brought him down with us from the U.S a few years ago. So he's been through a lot. I'll ask the vet about the stronger antibiotics. I hope that your son heals up quickly. IP: Logged |

Just letting everyone know that I took him to a different vet. A much better one. He took a culture from his ear, found out what kind of infection he had. Gave me some ear drops to put in. I had a follow-up done & it's all gone. IP: Logged |
