We have two 14 month old silver poodles. They're brothers. One has a beautiful coat, the other licks and he's staining around his legs from the saliva. I've tried whitening shampoo, couldn't find any for silver. The shampoo didn't help. One groomer suggested a peroxide mix, another groomer said it could cause yellowing. Any suggestions are welcome.

My dog does this on his feet, the vet said it is called bronzing. On the paws it is indicative of allergies. Have you talked to your vet about why he is licking and it is staining. Maybe he has allergies or something. If you control the licking behavior the bronzing should go away, it does on my dogs paws.

Are you sure they are not just GROOMING ? I was told this LICKING on the paws was an allergy thing, but honestly SHUG does not seem to have any allergies. I think she's just grooming. She does it every morning while on the end of my bed...then she's done and off to play.

Could it really be GROOMING ? NOT ALLERGIES ?

I think it could be both depending on the dog. If the dog cleans his feet and is done with it, then non-allergy. But if the dog sits there and excessively licks its paws like mine does certain times of the year, then yes its allergies. My poodle gets seasonal allergies and does this, but ever since she got off of prednisone and was put on a higher dose of deramaxx she get tear stains and now has that bronzing where she tends to lick. She does not lick her bum, but it happens there too. I think its the meds. Vet siad it was amild infection. Put her on anti-biotics and it cleared up for a little while then back it came. She never had that redish dishcharge from her eyes before. I will be talking to her vet again next week.

Lauri, it could be a food allergie too. I was thinking of maybe switching to california natural to see if there is a change. We feed them Innova right now. Which is an excellant food.
Do you have any pictrues you can post of your two?

I appreciate the replies. We took him to the vet and she mentioned it could be a few different things including allergies, dry skin or stress. He's the anxious of the two. Always wants to play ball, he liiiiives for the ball. We feed them "Nutro, Natural Choice" At first the licking was causing raw spots so we used a topical antibiotic, that worked, in addition we add Lanatone to their food. It's helped too, he rarely has raw spots anymore, just brown areas up his legs and under his belly from the continued licking. He just has to keep busy busy busy. They're rarely home alone and they're inside 99% of the time. Maybe it's time to try a different food, it could be a combination. We hate to put him on a prescription anti-depressant just yet. In the meantime I'd like to get his color back if it's possible. Thanks again.

Darby, my white Poodle is nine years old and he has allergies. He licks himself leaving rust colored stains on his hair. Since changing him to a raw diet he has quit licking everywhere but one front foot. The vet said that may be something else...neorological. Kind of an impulse thing he can't control. Obsessive. In all the years I have struggled with this I haven't found anything to take the stains off other than cutting the hair off. The saliva is what causes the staining...so I suppose if you wanted to wash his feet everyday, maybe use a little blueing when you do that may prevent them from developing.
Darby doesn't just lick his front foot ...he pulls the hair out as well. I have been spraying bitter apple on it whenever I catch him licking and chewing, it stops him for a while. My vet said often times when a dog has suffered with allergies for a long period of time, the licking and chewing becomes habit, like us chewing our nails. He said at this point with obvious success in getting him to stop chewing at the rest of his body by changing his diet...he is guessing that this is Darby's problem.

Maisey, Darby's name is what my grandmothers maiden name was. Its a nice reminder.

I think sometimes nervous dogs do get this impulsive way about soothing themselves. Kind of like smokers. So when they get nervous or in a situation they can't handle they shut down and lick away to sooth themselves. Thats my perseption.
My poodle will, like when I stop to talk with someone. Its like she does not know what to do, if I don't pick her up. So she soothes her mind, licking. What do you think Maisey.

I think that may be true..at leaste for some dogs. They probably all have different triggers for the behavior. Darby licks that front foot all the time...even when he seems relaxed. I think he started it because of the allergies and maybe now does it out of habit...it may also be partly because we have Witt now, Darby doesn't always feel as secure, especially when the big dogs play.
