Sometimes I really do think my dog understands me. About a month after have got him (he was 15 weeks old), he was chewing on a toy, I called his name (softly) and he looked up, I said "I am not your master, I'm your mother." He came straight over to me and kisses me...I thought that was the sweetest thing. Janny. IP: Logged |

I think my Husky understands. At least she talks back quite a bit when I talk to her. Wish I knew what she was saying. IP: Logged |

I think dogs understand body language much better than we humans do. They read every little movement and look we make and become experts in deciphering our actions and tone of voice. My dogs have a vocabulary of words that they understand as attached to an action or item, the rest I think is intuition and based on their observance of my tone or body language. Witt loves it when I talk to him and he talks back to me ALOT. IP: Logged |

I know that animals understand a lot more than most people give them credit for. Take the example of babies- they used to say that babies couldn't understand anything b/c they couldn't talk, now research has shown that babies actually understand most of what is being said. One time I was visiting my mom and her catahoula Bou was laying on the floor. Bou used to do this trick with bottles where he would take the top off of a plastic bottle like a soda bottle. He stopped doing it as much once he got older. While we were sitting there I asked my mom if Bou had done his bottle trick recently. She told me that it had been a few months since he had done it. As soon as she said that Bou got up walked across the room and picked up an empty soda bottle. He brought it back to where we were and took the top off of it then looked at me as if to say see I can still do it. Bou is a very interesting dog, he is very expressive and extremely smart. He has a propensity for getting into things while my mom is gone. Once he got into a box of presents that were individually packaged. He took them all out of the boxes and set them on the floor. When my mom came home the presents were all out of their boxes and laid out on the floor like he opened them just to look at them. One time when we were leaving the house, we left Bou loose b/c my mom has some creepy neighbors. There was something that I didn't want him to get into while we were gone. I took his nose in my hand and looked him in the eye and told him he had to be good and protect the house, but not to get into anything. I asked him if he could be good and I swear he nodded his head at me. We left and when we came home he hadn't gotten into anything. That dog understands what you say to him. My dogs on the other hand, one isn't very smart and the other one understands but ignores me. IP: Logged |

Oh yes, they understand. AND THEY REMEMBER a LOT longer than was first believed too. I know SHUG does. For instance her trips to Petsmart. At first, she was not FOND of the place...would pull on the leash and NOT want to go in. Now, she prances right toward the automatic doors, waits, prances right in. Loves to smell the place all over. ALL THOSE animals that have been in there. She will literally make noises with her mouth and open it....tries so hard to speak. Remember a DONKY spoke in the Bible....so listen up...it could happen to you too. IP: Logged |
