My boyfriend has always wanted a chihuahua and for Christmas this year, his mom has gotten him one. As you know, we have a rat terrier right now. We're getting this new little puppy on Christmas day, and I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for bringing a new puppy into a family that already has one. Ellie is very sensitive and I am just wanting to make sure that she knows she is still loved and is not "being replaced". Please give me some ideas...Thanks! IP: Logged |

I suggest introducing them some place besides your house, maybe at his mom's house. Spend some time there letting them get to know each other that way when you go home together it won't be such a shocker to your rat terrier, she might even be thrilled to be having a friend come home with her. Keep the fuss to a low roar over the pup and the meeting situation too. Happy Holidays! IP: Logged |

Introduce them slowly, make sure you are both giving them equal attention. Make sure both dogs have their OWN toys, and bowls and stuff. Good luck and congrats on your new pupkid. IP: Logged |

Ok!! We got him!! And come to find out, he's a miniature chihuahua. He is absolutely precious. We still haven't decided on a name yet so if anyone has any suggestions that would be helpful. Thanks for your suggestions as far as introducing the two. They both were a little leary of each other at first, in fact the new one thought Ellie was his mama!! It was adorable. Any more input would be much appreciated! IP: Logged |

Hi there! Congrads on your new kid. I recently added another furkid to our house, I let them each have their space for the first few weeks. While we were gone I would put one in my room and put a gate up so they could sniff each other out. The other one got run of the house. I would alternate, they were both small so this worked well for us. We did what others said earlier and for the most part it was a good transition. They are now best buds and cant stand to be apart, but also have their own personalities. (If that makes any sence) IP: Logged |

We decided on the name Tito. I even had a little name tag made for him...it's almost as big as he is!!! I can't wait until I can post some pics on here. He will make your heart melt. He is feisty though!! He likes to bite...not sure if its teething or what but his teeth are sharp!! Also, Ellie keeps trying to play with him...but it gets a little rough sometimes. She doesn't realize that he's a fraction of her size and can't play the same way. It scares me sometimes... IP: Logged |
