Last Thursday my 5 month old Rat Terrier broke all four bones in her foot. I had to go to the emergency vet b/c my vet was closed at that time. Well, needless to say they put a cast on it, BUT, they didn't put a cone on her for some reason. SO...she's chewed up the cast and it's about fallen off. Anyways...I took her to our vet today to get a new one put on, and for her to check out the x-rays...My question: Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping her from chewing on her cast?

I think the collar will work best but I have heard of people using bitter apple on the cast/bandage to keep the dog from chewing on it. When my Husky got spayed, I tried the collar but she kept taking it off and I could only put it on so tight or it would choke her so I just chose to keep a close eye on her (I wasn't working at the time.) I am sorry to hear about your dog. I hope he gets well really soon!!

There are a few different types of E-collars. There is one that basically keeps the neck from bend, kind of like having it in traction. Do a search on E-collars for dogs.

what kind of cast are they using? when wylie broke her toe they put a cast all the way up to the top of her leg. I would try the collar I think it depends on the dog

It's not like a fiberglass cast or anything...they have her foot in a splint, wrapped with lots of gauze, and then that tape, you know the kind they wrap around your arm when you give blood?, wrapped around that. The first time, it was only casted to her heel. My vet is doing it further up her leg this time.

ALSO: I was told that I'm supposed to keep her to a minimal amount of activity while in the cast as to promote healing quickly...the vet even went as far as to suggest that she be carried for most of the time while I'm home, and in the kennel when I'm not. My problem is...and anyone who has a rat terrier knows...she is SOOOO hyper and so squirmy. It's very hard to keep her still for any period of time. Any ideas on this one too?

I think Wylies cast was fiberglass. She .that is why she didnt chew it. she has as much energy as a JRT and she got it off, I mean by longand she did re-fracture her toe twice. the fracture was in her outer toe I was travelling at the time and the vet I took her to said she only needed it wrapped at that point. it was about 4 weeks, WRONG. I got home her regular vet put the big cast back on. poor thing ended up in it for over 8 weeks.
just make sure you keep her calm so she doesnt re-injure it

FYI- I put a sock on her foot over her cast and this has prevented her from getting to it. No damage done so far on the new one

As far as keeping her calm, GOOD LUCK. Errr, sorry.

I would try buying her some really nice chew toys - something huge and hard to get through. Perhaps the biggest bully sticks you can find. Pick up a Kong and creative things to stuff it with - but go easy on using it since you don't want her to pork up while she is less active.

Keep her crated or carry her as the vet suggested, and use the new chews to occupy her. Beyond that, it's very difficult to keep a dog still. Some will be less active of their own accord when they are not feeling well, and some won't.

Let us know how she is doing!
