We have had our lab/pit mix since he was three months old (now 2.5 yrs). We don't have an outside fence yet at our new house and our dog (Owen) will not stop getting on couch, chewing up shoes, etc. He was in a crate up until he was a year old just as our other dogs were - only while we were at work - but they outgrew the chew-stage LONG before Owen has. We feel that the only option right now is to crate him during the day until we can build a really really tall fence that he cannot bound over completely. Any other suggestions? He also tends to start little fights with our older male dog when we are not there...so crating does not seem to be such a bad option... But when will he outgrow this stage?!? goob seems to have some great insight into pit behavior but I would welcome anyone's response to this question. Thanks! IP: Logged |

I think that you have the right idea. I would crate him while you are gone. Just make sure he has plenty of chew toys and maybe give him a Kong to play with. Oh, and if you are going to be crating him during the day, make sure he gets plenty of exercise! Lots of exercise might even curb some of that wild energy he has been expressing too. A tired dog is a good dog!! As for how long he will he will go through this stage, I don't know. There are some knowledgeable people here that have labs and pitbulls that would be able to help in that area. I have Huskies and I crate them when I leave because I don't trust mine either!! Good luck. I think you are making the right choice. [This message has been edited by Karriesue (edited 12-17-2003).] IP: Logged |

can i ask what you mean by crating him do you mean a massive cage kinda thing, if so i agree we have a massive cage for each of our three dogs, during the day because a lot of dogs get distressed thinking this time u leave may be the last time and chew to take there mind of thing thats what my vet says anyway, my eldest dog is just two what we do is then gradually trust her every three months we try leaving her in the kitchen first for an hour then for half a day and gradually do it, if she chewed we ould then put her straight into the cage for a few hours and then again for 3 months while we are at work, and it has paid off ouch wood she has been outta the cage for about 3 months and nothing has been chewed, i find it good to leave her big bones to chew, she likes the stuffed flavoured ones best, Hope you get your chewing problem sorted soon, im sure you will, you have to remember all dogs have different learning speeds just like all us humans, some learn easily like labs and some take forever like pit bulls and staffys... Hope i can have been some help, anything else ya need to know bout chewing let me know i as i got three dogs ad they all do it! IP: Logged |

LAB!! There's your chewing problem. WE used to have a lab and he chewed until he was almost 7 years old!! Get him plenty of chew toys, and repremend him for chewing on bad things, reward him for chewing on toys. Crating him during the day is a good idea! IP: Logged |
