My sister has a wire hair terior that is about 9 years old. Lately the dog has been very snappy. She has snapped at the kids and her owner. My sister has called the vet to see what is wrong with her dog. The vet told her that the dog has something wrong with it's mind (can't remember what it was called) and needs to be put done otherwise the dog will worsen. Personialy I think the dog may have some other illness that is causing her to be snappy. They also told her that she could avoid doing this by putting the dog on somesort of medication that will cost her $300 a month. She would love to do that but she is on a very tight budget so therefore she can't.
My question is, is there any other way to save this dog other then putting it down? If there is ne1 that can help me to help her I would be very greatful.

I would RUN not walk to another vet to get 2nd opinion. Very often dogs start snapping because they arent feeling well and it may have something phsyically wrong like you suspect. So please tell her to see another vet and arrange for an appt for a phiscial exam. I cant believe this vet even gave a diagnosis over phone like that.

HI, I would get a second opinion has the vet even examined the dog.

Dogs are like humans when we are ill we can be a little grump animals are just the same.
I would have your sister to have the dog seen and see what the vet says i cant understand why the vet says taht this dog has a problem with its mind.
My dogs are snappy when not well but not once did a vet say they should be put down..
It sounds like this vet is out for the money so please advise your sister to see a different vet.

Hope your sister can find out what is wrong with her dog please keep us posted of her progress

1st of all, find out exactly what that Vet diagnosed him/her with.
2ndly, get other professional opinions. Don't tell the 2nd, 3rd, & probably 4th veterinarian what "exactly" it is, to see what they think could be the problem & solution, from "their own" opinion (not adding to what antoher Dr. said). Do you know what i mean??

Once you've find out the possible cause(s), do tremendous amounts of r e s e a r c h . . . GOOD LUCK .

Oh my gosh, there are some irresponsible vets out there!! It is sickening. I agree with the above. He definately needs to be examined by a responsible vet. Like the others here, I think he is not feeling well and it is probably treatable. Good luck and keep us posted.

Ok I have talked to my sister and got more details on the dog. By the way her name is Boots.

ok she is part terrior and part springer spanial.

she has drawn blood (on her owner) and snapps for no reason at my sister and her kids for no reason. No one has to be near the dog for her o snapp.

The dog does sleep with the kids at and and snapps/bites the even when they move in their sleep.

The vet has given no diagnoses. She was just told over the phone that the dog is old and has something wrong with it's mind. And sould be put down. She has an appointment to get her looked at but she thinks that won't help cuz the vet said what he said.

Other then that I have no idea what to say or do. My sister cries at the mirror subject of the dog. Can some one tell me what can be done? I will keep all posted on this matter. Thank you for all your concern......

I have to say that either you are not getting or giving all the information it seems. Even a rotten vet is usually smart enough to know better than to give advice like that over the phone. The dog is not snapping for "no reason" there IS a reason. Perhaps it has arthritis and is in pain, or some other illness, it may even be a mental issue...but NOBODY can tell you that unless they have physically examined that dog and run some tests at least. I suggest you have your sister take the dog to another vet...actually into the office for an exam.

Has anyone looked in her mouth?...Just as an after thought...I know a dog who had severe infection in his mouth and would snap at the air and get nervous when people approached him. He had a couple teeth pulled a good cleaning and some antibiotics and he is back to his old self. Just a thought.

I think the Vets the 1 who's gone c r a z y ! ? !

Animal Lover:
Take our advice, and have this dog examined by 1 or 2 different Vets just for a foundation prognosis. Then R E S E A R C H ! ! After that, get the opinions of another two Vets (only if it's definatly a surgical situation).

It's sad but true, i also had a Vet tell me this over the phone w/ my 1st dog about 5 years ago... I was like whaaa- !?!
I could'n t believe the ease for him to just tell me that. I was also like- ?!?
Some things you just don't forget....

Good advice Honeybear!

Definately get a second oppinion, sounds like this vet just doesn't want to deal with it.

She could just be getting old, and doesn't want to be messed with. I know alot of dogs that got testy as they aged.

Arthritis could be the coulpret as well. Animals tend to get agressive when they are hurting.

I know I get grumpy when I don't feel so good!

Please bring the dog in to a different vet for a thorough examination. As everyone else has said, there IS a reason even if we can't see what it is right now. I would also take precautions and not allow the dog to sleep with the kids for now.

If after a THOROUGH examination (bloodwork, x-rays, you name it) nothing physical turns up, I would seek the help of a good behaviorist.

My dog used to snap at me when I moved in my sleep. But I attributed it to her aweful and mysterious owner she had before. She does have arthitis now too. But what I would like to know is do you know if there is someone in that dogs house that is tormenting the dog so much that he may no longer trust anyone. No-one has mentioned this above. I know of a case where a dog was afraid to go to sleep because the owners would hit it with newspapers for being bad while it was awake. It took the dog a long time to be able to sleep in peace. Yes, it could be a neuological thing. especially if the dog suffered a head injury. What do you think? Are there any persons in that household that hate the dog. Please don't get mad at me for asking. It is just another possibility.
Also, like everyone says, please see another vet and have blood test and xrays done. Sure it will cost a bit, but her dog is worth it.

Sometimes if a dog is going deaf they'll snap because they get startled, especially when they are sleeping. I agree with everyone else. Get a second opinion.
