Boy did you ever come to the right place!

I was paniced myself not so long ago, when my dauchshund came up pregnant by the neighbors pomeranian. I got the best advise and support, from this board. They walked me through the whole experiance. I don't know what I would have done without them....What they shared with me (and what I did) was: #1 do you have a whelping box?

The things you will need are: newspaper to line the box.
I can't think of what it's called but one of those nose and ears bulbs (the kind that you use when you clean a babies nose) suction thingy????
sizzors, a dry towel, (maybe a couple of them)
a heating pad
and some blankets.
Another thing that helped me was: i watched that animal show called: That's my baby. They show an actual birth, and what to do.
Have a vet on call, just incase of an emergency.
The day Casey went into labor, she was acting very stressed out, she wanted to stay right by me all day. That night I was lying on the couch with her, and her water broke.

I put her in her box, and rubbed her muscles. She was in labor for a long time with that first pup. She began light labor at 10:30pm and had her first pup came at 1:30am. she had pretty hard labor for about an hour with that first one. She didn't know what to do with the first pup, she tried to jump out of the box with pup still attached. I had to tear off the membrane, suction out it's mouth, cut and tie the cord, and rub it with a dry towel. I then put it up to her, and she took over, began to lick it all over.

The rest of them (she had five) she did by herself...Thank God! After she was completely done at 8:30am. I took out all of the newspaper, cleaned out her box and put the heating pad on low under a blanket, layed them on top of it.....It was alot of work and a little scary (but that's just me)
Good luck to you! I know you'll do fine... I also know you will get alot of good advise and support from the great people on this board....Susan

It's called a bulb syringe, and I would think you could get one at any drugstore. It's used to suction out a baby's nose or mouth (or a puppy's).

Here is a picture of one: http://www.buyemp.com/dept.asp?dept_id=1011809

Thanks Jamiya! but i guess we were a little late to help.
Thank God nothing went wrong Squidgeyem, I'm so happy that mom and pups are o.k. But you have just begun here, please take Mikes advise about feeding mom chicken and rice. My Casey got so skinny, that it scared the heck out of me. How many pups did you say you had? Is your dog inside or outside? Keep a close eye on mom to make sure she doesn't get an infection. Because no-one was there when she delivered, you can't be possitive that she passed all of the after-birth. I'm not trying to scare you, it's just better to be safe than sorry. Do you have an appointment set up for her to see a vet? Well Congradulations!!!! and I hope all continues to go well for mom and pups.....Susan

Well you've definately come to the right place!! I've assisted in birthing things from Dogs to Cattle...

Get you some plenty sterile towels,
a box with one side cut out, and some blankets, or a dog bed, a package of puppy pads, and the vets number handy and a pet taxi ready.

She'll do all the work, do not mess with her during birthing unless there are prominant problems.

If you see a puppy coming out backwards, allow her to try to birth it, if she's having difficulties, you can assist by using a clean sterile towl to gently pull during contractions when she's pushing,

The puppy pads do best while she's whelping, put them down where she is and it will absorb most of the mess.

She'll clean up the mess, and the puppies, just make sure she does a good job, and when she's through place them in the box with the blankets.
Make sure there are no folds, and the puppies can't get under them though.

Good luck, call your vet for more information.
