Please help. I just got a 13 week old IG pup who came to me paper-trained from his breeder. I would like to train him to eliminate outside, but since he is an IG, he hates the cold (I live in Boston, MA- very cold). We go outside for walks and I wait for him to go to the bathroom but he just sits there and shivers. Then when we come in, he goes right to the paper and eliminates there. I took the paper away for a day, but he started peeing in his crate...Not sure what to do. Also, people say to let crying dogs cry in the middle of the night. How do you know if they need to go to the bathroom or if they just want attention? Tucker has slept most of the nights but gets up at 4. I live in an apartment building, so when he barks, I feel like I should get up and stop the barking so that I do not wake my neighbors....then do I take him outside, or let him go to the bathroom on his papers? Should I reward him for going on his papers? Help!! IP: Logged |

Relating to your situation of taking a dog outside in COLD weather (I live in Michigan,) I would say that it might be more trouble than it's worth to try to train him outside in this weather. Since he already knows paper training, I would stick with that until spring, and then training him to go outside will be much easier because he won't think of it as such an awful experience to go out in the cold! Then, by the time late fall rolls around again and the weather is colder, he will already be trained outside and the transition will be easier. For now, though, I would leave the papers and continue to praise when he uses them. Also, if he cries in the middle of the night, I would take him to his papers to eliminate, then immediately back in the crate-- teach him that barking doesn't mean freedom from the crate, but he can let you know if he has to use the bathroom. This is what worked with our dog, Cameron. She used to wake me up 1-2 times a night, and we lived in an apt at that time too, so I would just quickly take her out, then right back in the crate. Eventually she stopped crying in the middle of the night all together, except for the rare occasion that she really has to go, and then she will wake me. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |
