hey guys! My Lab is 15 months old and every morning we go on an hour walk together. She use to pull me around alot so i got a gentle leader which i LOVE! she never pulls anymore and is usually a pleasure to walk with. When she is on the leash my baby barks and jumps around when she sees another dog on our walk, especially if the other dog is barking. Well she was getting so good and stopped acting like that, because everytime we walked passed a dog and she was calm i would give her a tastey treat and lots of praise! Well today we were on our walk and came across two differnt dogs and each time she went nuts! She is usually very dog friendly but when she acts like this it is kind of embarassing. We were doing so good and then today she went nuts agian!(she is not trying to attack them, she just gets so excited) Anyone have any ideas on how to teach her or reinfoce the no barking and lunging when we see other dogs on leash? I would just like to be able to walk her without worrying if another dog is coming our way. any ideas would be greatly appriciated! Thanks

My parents own a lab who is now 6 years old and she has never been able to break him of that. My husband and I live in Denver, Colorado and they have a very huge dog park that we bring ours to and the majority of the labs I have seen there do the same exact thing. My vet said that labs have a tendency to be a little over territorial at the wrong times, lol.

Good Luck, I wouldn't worry at all and if you are then you should ask advice from your personal vet.

do you think she might be more territorial on our walks because we take the same route everyday? Maybe I should switch it up a bit.

She may be kind've terretorial, thinking, "Hey! This is my walk path and I want you OFF of it!". Me and Ranger switch every day, so we don't really have a problem with that!

Some dogs feel more threatened when on a leash and will act more aggressive. I would suggest taking an obedience class. A trainer would be able to help you with those issues and you would have the benefit of having the other dogs in class to practice with. When you get to the point where you can start introducing distractions there are some places that offer classes where each week you go out into a public venue, a different one each week.
Also, a Haltee is a training aid it is not intended to be used permanently. I suppose you could...but the goal should be to train your dog to walk on a leash nicely without using it. The haltee is an aid to help you get to that point.
Classes are fun and a great way to spend time with your dog, you may even find another sport or activity that you like along the way through taking the class.

My two do the same thing when they see a new dog or even a dog they've seen for a few years and owners are not friendly enough to let them meet. Whenever I get the chance I have the dogs meet, usually after they have met the dog their is no problem. They go a little nutty when they know they are coming up to a dogs house that they like to play with but its not the same as an unmet dog.
