Hi all, wanting some advice im albsolutley sure my dog is pregnant, she was on heat end october and has suddenly just dropped shes also become really subdude and attached to me, never wants me to leave. First thing i would like to know is it essential for her to see the vet for an examination prior to the birth or just after, we are quite confident she is well and having no trouble. Any advice on whelping would be fantastic

Thanks

might be a phantom pregnancy if she has been around no dogs. or has she been around other dogs? take her to the vet to see if everything is ok =]

HI, I have to agree with Kyles its better to have your dog checked by a vet ASAP to see if she is pregnant or not if this is a phantom pregnacy she can become very agressive and protective of objects she decides to mother.

If she is pregnant there is alot of problems that can arise during whelping from puppies being stuck to the mother being agressive to her new litter..

If you would like advice on whelping or self palpation to see if there is puppies in there please feel free to email me with any questions and i will be pleased to help you.

I breed german shepherds, Also how old is your dog.

We think shes between 18 months and 2 years old, we got her from a rescue centre when she was about 6 months, we also have 2 other male dogs and we actually caught them at it, end of october, we can actuallky feel the pups in her belly so we are sure its not a phantom pregnancy, i have worked out from the dayy we caught her that day 63 - 67 of a pregnancy is between xmas and new year so i assume thats when she's due, is that correct, do you still think vet needs to look at her prior?

no, every time she is on heat we keep her seperate from dogs but we went on holiday and took them with us and she came on heat incuring this situation.. we woul have her steralised but when we went to our vets to have it done they put her under anasthetic and had life threatening complications so they had to stop and bring her round. the complications were an allergic reaction to the anasthetic.

Wow, that's tough. Why don't you have your male dogs neutered, though, so at least you know she wouldn't get pregnant from them, and you don't have to keep separating them when she's in heat? Obviously it's too late now, but in the future it might be a good idea, because if it happened once, you know it will happen again- they will find a way- and you don't want to be dealing with unplanned pregnancies all the time, plus finding good homes for all the puppies and vet expenses for preparing the mother and giving all the puppies their required health checks and vaccinations. Puppies can be expensive, trust me! My family breed our Golden several times, and it is a lot of work!

yea thanks for that we had decided thats what we are going to do and we have already had one done but the one who has got her pregnant is only now seven months old, my vet won't castrate him til he's eight months, so on 23rd jan we hae all intentions of having him done! We had also decided we were going to let the bitch have a litter but just not quite yet!! oh well thanks for your help anyway! think im just having bad luck!

HI,Yes 63-67days is correct most dogs whelp on or around the 65th day signs of impending birth are Restlessness, Nesting behaviour will intensify she may go off her food but not all bitches do. her temprature will drop by 2degrees.

Regular checks on her temp will indicate the onset of labour and whelping can be anywhere upto 48hours later.

Problems to watch out for during whelping is the bitch straining for more than an 1 hour without producing a puppy and a vet should be seen straight away.

If a puppy is half born and the bitch tires you may need to help using a clean towel gently grab hold of the puppy and when the bitch pushes gently pull the puppy being careful not to rip the cord. you will need to stimulate the puppies breathing if you would like more advice and help please feel free to email me and i will give you advice on what to do and how to be prepared for the birth

Gotcha...that is bad luck- oh well you are just going to get the puppies sooner than expected! I have minimal experience with the breeding part because it was my parents that did all the hard stuff, I just helped out- but I know there are experienced breeders on this sight that can help you through the process-- anytime you are having an issue, don't hesitate to post it! Good luck

Congratulations on the new additions.
All that is needed now is to keep an eye on the mother and her babies and to increase her food by twice her normal body weight this will help keep her healthy.

boiled chicken with boiled rice is good for replacing nutrients..

Good luck

Wow, what luck that your female whelped alone and there were no complications. I hope someone is able to be home with her 24 hours a day for at least the next few weeks. Also important to have the vet come out to the house to check her over to be sure all the pups are out and to check each of the pups over to make sure they are all healthy.

Always always always take her to the vet before during and after pregnacy.

She needs some essential stuff when pregnant. Vitamins, and the vet can actually give her the puppy vaccinations so they are protected before their born.

Good luck, take her and they will tell you for sure if she is or not.
We had Charllotte pregnacy tested with a blood test and then sonogramed. I think the total bill was only like $50.
