How early could a dog get pregnat? I am just wondering, becuase I know a lot of dogs start their first heat cycle around 6 months and I don't know if that means they can automatically get pregnant or not. Ranger and his sister, Snickers, play together a lot, and they are both 6 months old now. Neither of them has been fixed, although Ranger has an appointment on Jan. 5. I know most people would simply say, don't put them together, but Snicker's family is getting a pool and a new patio and it takes up the WHOLE backyard! Please help! IP: Logged |

Yes, they can get pregnant during their first heat cycle but not all dogs begin it at 6 months either...some sooner, some later. I've never delt with a female dog in heat but maybe another poster can tell you what signs to watch for so you can keep them seperate at that point...until one or both of them is fixed. IP: Logged |

Hi, Smaller breed dogs mature sooner than large breeds. Heat cycles can start from 5months. After the 9th day of her heat cycle she will start showing signs of being ready to mate if a male is present she will raise her tail and turn it sideways the next 9-12 days is crucial to keep them seperated as this is the time she is likely to fail pregnant if mated. Even when her vulva goes back to its normal size please dont assume she will still not mate as some bitches do, The sperm from a male dog can survive in the bitch fro upto 5days after mating so chances of her falling pregnant are high.. Male dogs are sometimes not mature enough to get a bitch pregnant but as i say small breed dogs mature faster than large breeds. What breed are your dogs? mike IP: Logged |

pups certainly can get pregnant on their first heat , a friend of mines alsation had her first heat at 5 1/2 months and got pregnant, the signs of them ging into heat are a swelling in the back end and quite often licking themselves signs of blood often are not visible til about day 4/5 and heat last 10-14 days, there is an extremly high risk that if she was to have pups now they would die and most probably your bitch would too or be very ill, there bodies aren't physically able tiol they are 18 months at earliest best time is around 2 yrs. Also just for information the average dog starts heat between 8-9 months, anything else ya neeed to know let me know IP: Logged |

Heat cycles can begin anywhere from 5-6 months of age depending on the breed of dog. A bitch becoming sexually mature is marked with the onset of her first heat. Some bitches dont have there first heat until they are 18months old.. My 1st german shepherd bitch didnt come into heat till she was 12months old and all of my bitches only have one heat a year. Some bitches come into heat every 6months others its yearly. Heat cycles last on average 15-19days long Some not all unspayed bitches even if they have a heat and not mated they will more than likely have a phantom pregnancy.. Ideal age to have dogs spayed/nuetered is usually 6months old but this again depends on your vet and what time he/she thinks is best. IP: Logged |

*whispers* Ideal age to have a dog or cat "altered" is 8-16 weeks.

Thanks! Our vet told us not until they lose at least most of their baby teeth should we fix them. That was a new one for me! I don't know when Snicker's is scheduled to be fixed, but Ranger is due soon! IP: Logged |
