I thought you might all like to try this, it's very easy and if the ingredients agree with your dogs they are apparently scrumptious, at leaste mine thought they were.

3 sm. jars (2 1/2 oz) second stage baby food
(any of the meats your dogs may favor)

9 tablespoons powdered milk

13 tablespoons wheat germ

** Form into small balls. Bake for 12 minutes in a 350 degree F oven. Store in refrigerator.

I made like 50 cent piece sized ones before...I have bigger dogs though... you can make them smaller or bigger, just adjust the cooking time.

Blizzard, I have an Australian Shepherd/Lab X, thats the one in the picture you saw, his name is Dooley. I also have a one year old Catahoula X puppy named Witt, and a 9 year old miniature Poodle named Darby. I answered you in detail about the harness on the other thread, so you can check there.
Smiles, Maisey

I was thinking about trying to substitute some of the powdered milk with cranberry powder or a probiotic powder..somthing else besides the powdered milk, maybe just partially.

Also here is another recipe I found, I haven't tried it yet.

Organic Dog Biscuits

1 kg chickpea flour
1 organic egg
1 organic banana
50 ml organic honey
200 ml water
organic ground seeds and/or nuts

Mix all ingredients except the seeds/nuts together. The dough should be very stiff so add more or less water to achieve this. Sprinkle with the ground seeds/nuts. Roll and cut into desired shapes. Bake @ 170 C until very hard and golden brown.

*note: make sure to choose nuts or seeds that are NOT TOXIC.

One more ....

This one was actually on a horse web site, but I don't see why a dog couldn't have them too. They will be sweet so maybe not too much at a time.

Carrot Cookies

1 cup dry oatmeal
1 cup flour (rice flour might be best for dogs)
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tspn salt
1 tspn sugar
2 tspns vegetable oil (I substitute canola oil)
1/4 cup molasses

Mix all ingredients in the order listed. Make little balls and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake @ 350 degrees F for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

** I bought some holiday plastic buckets at the Dollar Tree (2 for $1), they come with lids and I am going to fill each one with, either doggie or horse treats for friends and families dogs or horses. It's an inexpensive gift, for an extra touch neatly write the recipe on a 3x5 card add a doggie or horse sticker and include with the bucket so they can continue to make the treats for their animal as well. Wal-Mart also has similar holiday decorated platic containers that are inexpensive.

That's funny!
I was just kidding about placing an order though .

1 of my teachers told me, if you don't want to be the cook in the family, just burn everything anyone asks you to cook for them, the first time they ask you... .

Not saying you don't want to be the cook, just thought i'd share that.
I knew it already, it was just funny comming out of my teachers mouth .

Here's one that I used for our dogs... it was adapted from the oatmeal-raisin cookie recipe on the lid of the oatmeal box, and with my cooking skills (some of this.... some of this...little more of that... ooohhh... that doesn't look so good, better add some more of this), the amounts aren't exact, but you can get the idea of it.

2 Eggs (I think I used 3 last time, and it turned out pretty good, so whichever)
1 1/2 cup flour (I've heard you can substitute potato flakes for the flour if your dog is allergic)
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 cups oats
Peanut butter (however much you like, I usually glop in about 5 big spoonfuls, enough that the mix is sticky)
1/2 cup oil, a little more if it looks like it needs it (vegetable oil or similar)
I also added in apple chunks, carrot chunks, and parsley (makes their breath smell nicer)

Put oil and eggs in and stir, then add the flour and baking soda. Once all that's mixed, add the oats, then whatever else you want, then the peanut butter, and stir it all up again. You might have to add a bit of water if it's too thick.

Then plop the mix out on cookie sheets and heat, I had the oven turned to 325, so they would dry out and be crunchy.

Two people tried them on seperate occasions, both promptly spit them out on the floor, so I'd probably advise against trying them yourself, but the dogs are CRAZY for them. They line up at the oven while they're baking, and dance around like little circus clowns when I get them out, waiting to taste one.

They (the cookies, not the dogs!) keep pretty well in the fridge, but since we have 5 dogs eating them, a batch only lasts a couple weeks, if we had less dogs, I'd probably freeze.

I also tried drying out liver for them a couple months ago (those liver treats are so expensive in stores, I figured it'd be easier to make them at home), they smelled HORRIBLE! While I was cutting them up, and while they were in the oven, the smell permeated through the whole house. I had to turn them up higher to get them done sooner (you're supposed to let them slow bake at a low temp for 6-8 hrs) because I couldn't stand the smell, then when I took them out, they were hard little black cubes. I gave the dogs each one, and upon hearing the crunching sounds, was afraid they were going to break their teeth The house stunk for almost a week afterwards, even after repeated air freshener run throughs, febreezings, and window/door openings. From now on, I'll buy the livers if we need them... just figured I'd send out a warning in case anyone was thinking about making them

I am in the USA LOL..I thought I would convert it later. I'm not very good at this so you'll just have to deal with the way my mind figured this.

50 ml= 3 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon

200 ml= 3/4 of a cup +4 teaspoons (or 6.8 oz)

170c = 337.5 degrees F...I'm going with 325 degrees F.

I am still having trouble figuring out proper measurement for the chickpea flour, first of all I have never heard of this...apparently it is gluten free. My problem is that I can't convert kg ( a weight measurement) to cups or a volumn measurement. The best I can offer is....
1 kg = 2.21 pounds of chickpea flour

If anyone can help with this it would be great, I have always gotten hung up with this. I tried conversion charts all over the internet even on recipe sites...no luck.

LMBO goob! People who give recipes like you do are how I end up in trouble! There is a Russian family a couple doors down and the mother and grandmother are wonderful cooks. I had been helping the mother with her English and I managed to help her son get a full scholarship to an Art School so she asked me one day while we were visiting what she could do for me..after much telling her "nothing", it started to feel like I was insulting her in some way, so I asked her to show me how to make a couple recipes she had made and I loved. Within 10 minutes I knew it wasn't going to work..she never used any measurements! She just tossed in pinches and handfuls, a grab of this and a grab of that...made me crazy!!! I tried to explain to her that I needed amounts in a form I could write down and follow to the letter, she just didn't understand why....she must have had one heck of a laugh talking about me to her friends and family later. Her mother...the grandma thinks my husband is starved(because I can't cook) and frequently brings him sweet treats, she speaks not a word of English but delights in my husbands OOOOO's and AHHHH's.
I can't stand the liver either, I refuse to put them in my treat pouch, they make it smell, not to mention my hands.

Well, I probably wouldn't be able to follow my own directions, so I guess that says a good bit about them... I just sort of eliminated things from the original (human) recipe that didn't look healthy (salt, two types of sugar, just what Haley the diabetic pooch doesn't need), added in things that sounded pretty good (the parsley, carrots, apples), then started putting all the stuff together, modifying until it smelled edible (didn't look too tasty, but did look pretty healthy). I can say that they smell nice cooking, and do look sort of edible when they're done (which could be why people have made the mistake of thinking that they tasted good ).

We have a lot of family right in the area we live, my grandparents and an uncle live in the house behind us, and another aunt and her husband live right across the street, so I'm always wandering from house to house seeing who's having what for dinner (Goo loves her trips to visit "her" granparents ) , and they're always sending things up for my dad because "my mother never has food in the house" (their words, not mine). I'm one of those people who knows the frozen french fries are done by the smoke seeping out of the oven... and since all the little lumps of charcoal (errmm... fries) go to the dogs, it's no wonder they love it when I cook

quote:
I can't stand the liver either, I refuse to put them in my treat pouch, they make it smell, not to mention my hands.

Oh no... these liver didn't smell after they were cooked. That could be because they were hard as rocks, and the smell couldn't find its way out of the petrified treat to the rest of the world

I messed around with the baby food recipe from above tonight, and decided I like doing this better: I didn't like how sticky the dough was...it makes it hard to make the little balls, so I added some flour to the recipe until it stiffened up quite a bit and then refrigerated it for a while. Then when I did form the balls I started by dropping a small spoonful in a bowl of flour...very lightly. It made rolling it into a ball much easier. Once I layed it on the cookie sheet I pressed it into a coin shape. I also bought some different baby food..I picked out some organic stuff that was not totally meat. Tonight I made Ham & Apple and the boys went nuts for them. They smelled good baking too. Tomorrow I am going to go get some organic flour, I'm not sure what type yet. I'm also going to add some grated cranberry or cranbberry powder. This recipe is fun to mess around with and of course the dogs are very supportive! LOL.

I made some with the baby food and SHUG loves them.

I'm gonna try the others too.

Can dogs actually eat white flour ? I would think it would be better than wheat come to think of it, with all the allergies to wheat.

Do you think the rice flour is better ?

Yes shug I definately think rice flour is a better choice and thats what I used while messing around last night. Wheat flour is the one that most of these recipes seem to have though and I got them off a holistic site, usually they go for hypoallergenic recipes. You could use any kind of flour you wanted, I didn't realize how many kinds there are. You won't find them at your regular grocery store though. I got the rice flour at Natures and I am heading over to my aunts All Naturals store tonight to see what she has.

I finally tried the Carrot Cookie recipe...I discovered that if you add about 1/8 cup more of molasses it makes the dough stickier and easier to make the balls. Otherwise they get too crunchy and fall apart. I also found that using a melon baller made the balls uniform and the perfect size. I pushed the dough into the baller so that it was flat on the exposed end then banged it on the cutting board to release it. They baked up better when compacted. Also rinse the melon baller in hot water after every couple balls that way it doesn't get too sticky and they will fall out better.
You can also use apple or unripe pear instead of shredded carrot. Make sure not to use any part of the core if you do. My dogs loved these treats as well as the horses did, they are awfully seet though so i wouldn't give to many at a time. I really like this recipe!

Maisey,

As far as your 1st recipe (your original post), can i substitute the Wheat Germ w/ Rice Flour? If so, how much Rice Flour should i put? Should i also put 13tbs?
Do i still let it cook for 12min?

What size balls do you make & how much do you end up making?

Sounds G R E A T, where'd you get this recipe? Is it yours?

I'd r e a l l y appreciate it, Thanks A-Lot !!!

**If there's any 1 more nutritous ingredient that you could/would add, basically, what would you recommend ??

LOL GOOB, (liver smelling bad)

Tell me about it. We used to get fresh liver from the market and hang it in the smoke house with the jerky and stuff for the dogs...never again. I learned that the smell migrates to everything, plus liver can be harmful to dogs.

SMokey got extremely sick off of it. I bought a bag of dried liver treats from the store and he ate one peice and not another, the next day he had bad diareaha, vomiting, high fever and very lathargic.
The vet said the liver I had gotten was contaminated with a deadly bacteria that the dehydrater did not kill.

Soooo, I will never again feed store bought liver. I cook the crud out of ANY livers I feed my dogs, chicken, or whatever it is. Other than that, its just fish bait for us.

I made the Doggie Pops. But how do you keep the rawhide sticks from curling up when cooking them???

O.K.
Just thought I could help you a little with the metric/imperial conversion:

1Kg = 2.2 pounds, therefore
1 pound ~ 0.45Kg

50 ml ~ 1.7 ounces
1 ounce ~ 28 grams(dry) or ml (liquid)
200 ml ~ 1/5 quarts

That's roughly the conversion.

It's kinda tuff, it took me about two years to get used to and understand the US/UK system, I was just used to the metric which is a lot easier... just increments of 10.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and yes, the cookies sound delicious and I will try to cook some for my "wolf pack".
No, the liver sounds horrible, and as much as I love my babies, I can not live in a house filled with liver stench for a week.
Maybe if we boil it before baking it, it won't be that bad??!!

Okay, i finally tried baking last night...
Yeeee-Haaaaww!!! It all worked out, well kinda...
I tried the Baby-Food one, but i had to improvise on 2 out of the 3 ingredients... .

Powdered Milk was only sold in these huge amounts and were pricey because of that.
So, i substituted it w/ good old organic blue-berry yogurt. Yeah, on the moist side, but yummy & nutritous...

And i substituted the Wheat Germ for All-Purpose-Flour. I was trying to stay away from Wheat for Flour (which BTW both are known to be allergic food). It did'nt make much sense to switch, but i was in a rush sooooo, i grabed the bag w/ big letters saying ALL-PURPOSE-FLOUR "for all your baking needs"...
I wanted to get Rice Flour, but it had a process that i needed to do to it for it to even become flour. I wanted something for dummies, things that i could just toss in the bowl & mix away!

Anyhow, it all worked out just fine. It actually took longer to cook than i thought but it ended up being eatable! For a 1st time baker, i thought i did good . I actually tasted it myself. No-taste. Just the taste of flour.
My dogs loved them!!

Overall, i got left over flour, & i got experiance... There's always a next time ...
Watch Out Now!

I'll probably add egg or something like that next time around.

What do you think i should/could add??

Dog angel...I found those conversions but what I wanted was a volume measurement, like cups or tablespoons I'm just going to have to sit down and weigh out the stuff and then portion it out in measuring tools. My husband keeps saying.."you can't do that!" I can't find anylace that will convert weight to volume like I want, but I will figure it out. I think you could do it for specific things like flour.
