Hi, I read about a great idea on here a while back, I don't remember who posted it though. Try attaching his leash to your belt loop inside the house, make him follow you around. Don't know if this works or not, but it sounded like a good idea.....Good luck! Susan

Puppies are not born knowing how to walk on a leash. Coax your little guy along with praise and treats (your neighbors will think you are nuts, but who cares!). Keep it short for now. He will eventually learn that going for walks is a great thing!

Some people have also tried carrying the little guy a couple of houses down and then walking back to the house with them. Sometimes they are more likely to walk if they are heading toward home.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

I thought I would share the advice of my daughter when she read this. She suggests carrying a stick with a treat (she thinks a marshmallow is a good choice)stuck on the end and letting it trail just in front of the pups nose. *Giggling* She actually isn't too far off the mark...you have a very young puppy, don't expect too much too soon. Use a happy voice, lots of excited coaxing and treats to get your pup to move forward on the leash. Make it a game and fun.

blizzard - Don't worry too much! When Max was that young he didn't want to go for walks either. I was so upset because one of the reasons I wanted a dog was to go on walks, hikes and x-country skiing with me. I went to training class a few weeks later and the trainer said it wasn't unusual at all for dogs that age to not want to go for walks. He suggested what Jamiya did, to go up a few blocks carrying your dog or in the car and then get out and walk home. Good luck! Also be sure to use the search feature on the site if you are looking for a wealth of information on puppy owning. We have recently had lots of puppy owners asking questions =)

Make sure that he is adequately vaccinated before you take him outside, especially anywhere that he could come in contact with other dogs! Diseases like parvo can live in the dirt for 7 years, so any grass should be considered questionable. Please ask your vet for advice about when it is safe for your pup to be outdoors.

You can also try walking him inside, to get him used to the leash. Then you can graduate to walking outside when he gets good at it inside (and when your vet says it is okay to take him out).
