We recently got a 9 month old Yellow Lab (we purchased her last week) who is scratching her nose raw in the crate during the time my wife and I are at work. We think it may be SA but sometimes I'm not sure. If I leave a room and my wife is petting her, she will leave my wife and follow me. She essentially is by my side constantly. If I leave to go outside, she will pace in the house, go to where I was just sitting and sniff my scent, scratch at the door, and whine. I am going to start trying to desensitize her to let her gain some confidence in being alone, but my wife and I are concerned about her nose and snout. It is being scratched right down to the skin. We don't want her to hurt herself. We've given her a Kong and I walk her for approximately 30 - 40 minutes in the morning before we leave for work. The crate is big enough and we've felt around the wire crate for rough edges and there does not appear to be any. She gets into her crate willingly at night when it is time to go to bed (we have it by our bedside - we leave the crate in the bedroom during the day too). Has anyone else ever experienced this with their dog, and if so, can they offer some tips on how to prevent a dog from scratching themselves. Thank you in advance for your replies and assistance.

Honeybear,
I did read your article and found it very informative. We had a friend of ours provide us with some more articles as well. We are going to work on some training techniques and other things. We have put a Kong in her crate that is only for her crate and that seems to work for a while. I also am beginning to wonder if she is just getting bored as well. We had to create her a few times this weekend for much shorter periods and she did much better. Thank you for the link to the article, I appreciate it.
