I had just talked to my vet to ask if it would be safe to bring another puppy into the house this soon after losing my sweet little Pepita. He suggested waiting atleast a month. He said that there is something going around my town - something possibly new - and they have not ruled out that that is what Pepita died from. They said she did not exhibit signs of Parvo - so it was ruled out.

HAS ANYONE HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THIS "THING" GOING AROUND????

Pepita's symptoms:

  • Wanted to just sleep - lethargy
  • Wouldn't eat - would still drink a little
  • White gums
  • Bloated stomach
  • Dehydration
  • Anemia
  • Sudden weight loss
  • No diarrhea - No loose stools - but soft and formed
  • Diagnosed with Coccidia
  • Close to her passing she became very listless - possibly from not eating - hypoglycemic - tried karo syrup - did not help

Below normal temperature - would stay around 98 - 100 - keeping her wrapped up with warmed up socked with rice in them helped keep her temp up.

HAS ANYONE HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THIS "THING" GOING AROUND????

I think I will call the vet in another month to see if they have found out what it is that is making the dogs so sick - I am planning on moving out of my house between Feb and May anyway so I may just wait till then - to be on the safe side.

it could be parainfluenza, or a strain of flue that dogs get.

Defiately disinfect your whole house and yards and wait a month maybe two before bringing another dog into the house.

You can use a mixture of bleach and water on stuff, but dilute it so it doesn't bleach anything, and rinse it off immediately after use.

if you have white carpet, you can substitute bleach in a wetvac. You can rent them pretty much anywhere I think they are called Rug Dr's.

Good luck and so sorry for your loss.

I disinfected everything with ammonia and water 1:10 also old fashion lysol and water 1:10. Do you think this was sufficient? - better yet I think I will rewash everythig with diluted bleach. I have beidgh carpet - but I think I will rent a rug doctor anyway

Some of those symptoms could be due to the coccidia, so it's difficult to pinpoint what a secondary problem could have been.

I just read about a second kind of parvo that does not involve diarrhea:

"The second form of CPV is cardiac syndrome, or myocarditis, which can affect puppies under three months old. There is no diarrhea because the virus multiplies rapidly in muscle cells of the immature heart. Puppies may stop suckling and then collapse and die within minutes or days. No effective treatment is available for cardiac syndrome, and surviving puppies may have permanently damaged hearts."

Was the pup tested for parvo?

I don't think puppies get bloat.

Several types of worms can cause bloating and anemia as well. Usually there is also diarrhea, though.

There have been a couple of posts on this board lately about a disease killing puppies that is not parvo. Here is the thread: http://www.auspet.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001747.html

If you are moving anyway, I think it's an excellent idea to wait until then to get a new dog. Once is enough to have to suffer through such a terrible thing.

Thank you - I don't think it was the parainfluenza because she did not have a cough...no upper respitory problems...possibly this new Parvo - the vet did say she had a heart murmur and the lady I bought her from stated that when her vet checked her out he did not mention one...

Oh my gosh. It just dawned on me. Last week I heard there is something going around and is killing puppies. It is similar to that of Parvo but is not parvo. They say to wash your hands and shoes so's not to bring it into your home. I believe I read it online. If you have a puppy that does not have it's shots, be extremely careful.
