I started feeding my 13 month old peekapoo real food while we were camping. Just a little chicken here...a little steak there, and before we knew it, we had developed a HABIT.

SHE DOES NOT WANT HER FOOD any longer and does not poop as often. Once a day, maybe twice....but she will hold out forever to wait on something else from the table and will not touch her food anymore.

Is there something I can feed her to help with her bowels....they are a little dry to me. She is in excellent health, but has lost a pound due to waiting on the table food.

How can I get her back on her food ?

THEY SAY, do not do ANYTHING even once that you do not want to KEEP DOING with a pet. I'm a believer NOW.

ANY help would be aprreaciated. Thanks, Shug's Mom

You might try a new *fancier* food! Our dog was a picky eater and we switched to Science Diet ( I know there are other people here who don't approve of Science Diet and we're actually looking into alternatives) ...but he loves it and actually drools as I'm putting food in his dish! Or mix his food with canned food, that might help....also while our dog was being picky sometimes I'd powder dried liver (I think the brand is Benny Bully's) and mix it with his food and he'd gulp it down. He likes 'people' food too but we tell him no and luckily he's a good listener... have you tried teaching your dog it's 'bad' to beg?

Yes....all of the above....including NOT TO BEG...she does not....Looks at us for it...we say NO...that's it.

Have sprinkled dog spices on it, cut up bacon in it, and we have her on a food she adores. It's the Nutra Food Innova...please try it, you'll like it. Very natural...very good to them.

ANYWAY, she just holds out until she can't go any longer for the real food. Seems not to be able to eat a few bites and go back to her food anymore. She's obessed with it.

It's the weight loss...only a pound...that I am worried about. When we have deprived her of real food, she would eventually give in and eat her food in hunger, but now she seems to WAIT a very long time for the real food, before resorting, out of great hunger to her food.

I thought you could give them a few bites and they would be happy and enjoy it, but not STOP their food altogether. We've doctored it every way we know how.

Dismayed !!

A dog will not starve itself to death unless there's something wrong with it. The trick is to be consistant. You can't cave and give in. Just keep putting down the food and she'll learn that that is all she's getting and she'll eat. She may loose some weight but she'll eat when she gets hungry. Just hang in there.

As far as her poops go, I wouldn't worry too much about it unless she's really straining to go. Keep water available to her. You can try replacing her food with half dry and half wet food if you're really concerned with it but I don't think it's a big deal. it's probably because she's not eating as much as she used to and her diet is different now.

A little check-up at the vet might not hurt, either. It could be just coincidence that you gave her people food and now she won't eat the dog food, when the real problem is some sort of illness.

Charllotte and Smokey are both on a whole some diet! They always have dry food (Purina One) in an auto feeder, then twice a day they get meats, veggies and good stuff. Dogs weren't meant to eat Dog food ya know.

What would you rather eat???

Try leaving dry food out all the time, and only feed her Veggies and un seasoned, well cooked meats.

I would think try again, but not from the table, and if she begins to starve herself again, just give her dog food and maybe some people-food flavored dog treats. We gave Ranger people-food from teh table once, and then he decided he liked stuff from the trash can. He is getting better about that, but he still eats his food!

I agree Sam...that's what I told my husband. If you were a do and had a choice of table food or DOG FOOD what would you want ? I mean....my SHUG...KNOWS when I get the chicken strips out of the freezer. I now cook one just for her. SHE ADORES IT. Likes carrots too...she eats those raw.

I give her small pieces of apple with peanut butter on it too....she adores that. It's just mine and her time when we do that. About every 3 or 4 days.

WELLLLLLL, at least I know she will eat when she gets hungry enough. I was getting worried.

THANKS A BUNCH GUYS....

I've never had luck with apples, though they will jump up on the pear trees for a quick snack! We've had to fence off the trees cuz they were eating most the pears!
