Hi! I was afraid to put what he does in the title in case children read this board. Our Beagle is 12 weeks, and for the last week he has humped my husband's leg a couple of times and has constantly tried to climb onto my 4 year old son's legs when he is crawling on the floor playing with the dog and tried to hump my son. He is not neutered yet because the vet doesnt want to do it til 16 weeks at least. Does this signal sexual maturity already or is this a puppy thing? Ive never seen a puppy do this. WOuld love your advice as always! love, ann

I have a male Yorkie and he has tried to hump everything i think its a puppy thing. I gave sebastain his own special bunny that he has fun with so he would leave us alone i'm not going to fix him because i have a little girl also and i want to breed them so he is getting alot of pratice while waiting for her to be ready. I think after you fix your puppy he wont do that anymore. Hope this helps

At that age I don't think its sexual but more of a puppy thing. My mothers Poodle did this as a puppy and also my neighbors Husky x.

I've not dealt with this either, but I do know that both a male and a female will do this as an adult to show dominance over the dog. Maybe he will be a dominate dog. Just a hunch.

Here are links to a couple of relatively recent threads on this issue. Sorry I can't be of more direct help.

All I have to offer on this is my own experience with Witt. He did it as puppy here and there, but not to us. He did wake up one night from a nap and came out to see me...he started playing with our other dog, rough housing, he started yelping to high heaven, I laid him down to discover he had an erection and the bulb part was stuck outside the sheath which accounted for the yelping. I called a friend of mine sort of panicked, he laughed at me and told me to distract him, I did and it went down. He then told me to go get him neutered. He was 5 months old, we didn't neuter him until he was 6 months. He has humped our other dog since once or twice and my daughter while wrestling on the floor. We just distract him or tell him "no" and move on. He rarely does it. When Dooley was a puppy he did hump a female puppy the same age as him once but thats the only time I saw him do it until recently and I have seen him a couple times do it to Witt, Witt either ignores him and keeps playing or kicks his butt rather abruptly ending play. Again that has only happened a couple times. We don't make a big deal of it, we either distract or say "no".

annie, I actually remember a post that had something to do with this...it was a while back, I remember telling about a female dog I had...maybe do a search and see what people had to offer.

My friend has a yorkie, and when he was about the same age, he would hump EVERYTHING- his favorite was a little blue bear about the same size as him- it was almost comical to watch because he would do it constantly and my friend would get so embarrassed by the behavior- but really, it's just a natural part of their development, and it should subside for the most part after he is neutered. He may still try to do it once and awhile after neutering (I think it is just instinct), but not nearly at the level you are seeing now!

On a side note, many vets encourage early spaying and neutering- we got Cameron spayed at 4 months, and I think it was a good age, The vet send they tend to recover more quickly when they're younger. It might be something you could talk to your vet about.

A lot of times it has nothing to do with sex but with establishing dominance in the pack hierarchy, aka your household. In your case Annie, you are apprently the top dog but your dog wants to be at least second in command over your husband and child.

lol, Floobs doing this too. We just laugh and distract him. He has a soft toy he humps when he gets ahold of it a certain way. I just put it down to instinct so don't get embarassed by it.
My vet won't neutere him till he's 9 months, I questioned him saying I'd been told 6 months was best but he said he'd be a better dog waiting till 9... anyone else heard this?

It's not just a puppy thing...not all dogs grow out of it. My pup humped strangers legs like crazy, grew out of it after he was fixed, then a year later started jumping up on people and humping their hips. It took time to train him out of that habit. My old boss' dog (4 years old and fixed) still humps people...and the bigger dog's head....and the cat.....

Nik, 9 months?! No way. I can't think of any reason for that. Your vet is behind the times. I have posted many articles about this before, but the bottom line is that the recommendation is to have them neutered/spayed at 8-16 weeks. The animals bleed less during surgery and recover faster, and the surgery itself is faster.

Here is one quote:
http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/ope/ivb/spay-neu.htm:
"These studies report that anesthetizing 6- to 7-week-old puppies and kittens was uneventful. Spays are reported to be easier and faster at 6 to 7 weeks than at 6 to 7 months because there is little subcutaneous fat to hinder entrance to the abdominal cavity and the lack of vasculature reduces hemorrhage. Finding organs was no harder than on the older animal. The speed of castrations at 6 to 7 weeks and at 6 to 7 months is the same, and the testicles are easier to remove and break down. Finally, the younger animals recovered faster and with less pain."

And some more pages to look at:
http://www.exoticbengals.com/spay.htm
http://www.danesonline.com/earlyspayneuter.htm
http://www.king.igs.net/~brica/esp.htm

Also, people used to think that early spay/neuter would stunt growth, but the opposite is actually true.

Are you happy with your vet otherwise? I would get a new one if not.

I know! I couldn't beleive it either but 6 months is common practice over here. I rang around a few vets and they all said 6 months was the earliest they'd *happily* do it.
I have every confidence in my vet and since it seems noone else will do it either I'm just gonna ask when I take him in for his next worming tablets if they'll do him at 6 months... I don't think I'll be able to cope a further 3 months lol.

Or vacination process is quite different to yours too... we have 2 lots, one at 9 weeks, then a booster 2 weeks later, that's it till the next year.
