I have a 10 week old Jack Russell (2lbs). I got her 4 days ago. Yesterday I took her to the animal hospital because I noticed her gums were very pale and all she wanted to do is sleep. They tested her blood and stated that her "red cell count is quite low" They suggested to use Pet Tinic twice daily to rebuild her red blood cells. They dewormed her with Drontal Plus. I gave her the first dosage of Pet Tinic at the hospital she held it down fine. I gave her second dosage last night she threw it up - falling down when vomiting because she is weak.
The cause of the anemia is unknown at this time because of the inability to get a sufficient fecal sample. She has not had a bowel movement in over 24 hours (yesterday night) - urinating fine. She ate yesterday morning refused to eat anymore and the vet was able to get her to eat this morning.
I asked the vet if it could be hookworms, she said possibly or roundworms or a parasite - this will be determined once a fecal sample is obtained.
The vet said this is not life-threatning but I am really concerned - I stayed up most of the night with her and probably will be up tonight also. She just sleeps all the time, can barely stand up.
On top of this, the vet stated that she has a slight heart murmur but stated that many times they outgrow this.
If anyone has experienced this please let me know what you did...any suggestion or advice is welcome from all.

Thank you,
VERY CONCERNED MOM

I have no personal experience with this, but I did find this article about anemia: http://www.purebredlabs.com/what_does_it_mean_to_be_anemic.htm

From the article, it looks like worms would be the most likely problem. I hope they can get a fecal sample soon!

I also found a reference that said eating onion can cause anemia in a dog. Did your pup get into anything like that, or ingest any medication that might have fallen on the floor?

Any problems with fleas or ticks?

Keep us informed about his progress!

Thank you for the article - it was very informative.
Finally for a fecal sample - she tested positive for Coccidia - they started her on Albon Oral Suspension. Her vet said it could take up to 2 weeks for recover.
Does anybody know any information on this parasite? Anyway I can boost her immune system? Enchinacea possibly?

All suggestions and advice are welcome.

Yes, it is worms. It is very common in puppies. Nala had it at the shelter, but was treated with Albon and it was gone by the time we got her.

I would do a search on Google (or your favorite search engine) for "coccidia" for more information.

It's probably okay to give echinacea, but I don't know the dosage. I would ask the vet to be sure.

I'm not sure- is it a worm? - the information I found on it is that it is a single celled parasite - a protozoa...but whatever it is it is making my poor puppy very sick

I looked up a lot of information on it - I'm hopeful that she will turn around...

FYI - for future reference if anybody else is faced with this. The information I found said that clorox (bleach) will not kill it. I found to use Old fashioned lysol or ammonia. Use 1 part Lysol or ammonia to 10 parts water. This is what I did...I am also laundering her blanket and pillow with a cup of ammonia...
