I have to go out of town this week-end and I Have someome coming over to feed the dogs and cat both morning and night. Now usually Both Jake and Wylie have like 15 hour bladders. but with the dog door they also gotten used to the dog door so they are not on any kind of schedule to go. ( I do shut the door at night) Every once in awhile then need to go at night so I get up and let them out. Now here ismy dilemma. I would like to keep the door open, but I am scared because last week, I woke in the middle of the night to 2 raccons staring thru my glass bedroom door. I am afraid they may come thru the dog door. Is this something I need to worry about? Honeybear IP: Logged |

I don’t have a doggie door, but I know about raccoons! I would say close the door at night and tell the pet sitter to come over later in the evening to let your doggies out, and early in the morning too to avoid an accident. An accident in the house is better than a raccoon in the house! I was woken up one night by two baby raccoons sitting on to of my window ac unit, trying to climb up the aluminum siding. IP: Logged |

I'm thinking with the dogs and the cat in the house, probably no. THough you may ask your friend whos feeding for you to close the door at night and reopen it first thing in the morning. I left a window open one time and a squirl had a ball with a loaf of bread on the counter!!! IP: Logged |

My dad had a problem with the neighbors cats coming in, so he got special collars for his cats and a door that only opens if the animal has the collar on. I don't know if you can do that or not, but it would keep the racoons out if you can. IP: Logged |

I know someone that was accustomed to leaving the back door open in the summer until she awoke to a room ful of broken up pizza. I have also had a racoon try to get into my mailbox. Its the kind you put the mail in from outside and it drops inside. Gosh that was scarey. ------------------ IP: Logged |
