I have a one year old mixed breed dog. Every time I leave him alone to go to school he howls, whines, and sometimes even tears up things in the house. It is very irritating and I dont know what to do anymore? Can anyone give any advise? Please help!! IP: Logged |

My mixed breed dog is almost 2 and he's been doing that whining thing as well. He used to chew things up, but I got into the habit of using a baby gate and keeping him in the kitchen where he couldn't get a hold of anything that was of value to me until I could trust him. That took about 3 months of doing that on a regular basis. But as for the whining, it just takes awhile for the dog to get used to you leaving. Once in awhile, I come home and I can hear a howling coming from my house, but my neighbour reassures me that it doesn't happen often at all compared to when he was a little younger. Maybe it's just a maturity issue. Have you always been at home with the dog and recently leaving it for longer periods of time? IP: Logged |

Definately Separation axiety, since you said he crys when you leave. Try krate training him that might help, or get him a buddy! IP: Logged |

I would definately try confining your dog to a certain area during the day, so that s/he can't tear up the house and you won't get frustrated and cause your dog to get more upset and start the cycle all over, etc. You can use a baby gate to close off a room, and then dog-proof the room, or you can buy a pen at a petstore (we have one from petsmart that is about 16 square feet). These pens are really easy to put up and take down, and can be compacted for easy storage. Also, have you tried giving your dog a kong during the day? When we leave for work, we always give Cameron a big kong stuffed with treats and kong stuffer that we have frozen overnight. We make it really challenging to get everything out, so she can work on it for at least an hour or two, and this helps to take her mind off the fact that we are gone- I think sometimes she even looks forward to when we leave because she knows she'll get a kong IP: Logged |
