I was wondering if there was a way to tell if certain wild Mushrooms are poisonous that grow in my backyard? I'm sure there's a way to tell just by it's look, but i don't know what to look out for.

Sometimes these Mushrooms look real close to the ones that people eat (as food), and some look real identical to the ones hippies eat... !?! No-offense to psychedelic's .

I just don't want my boys to get into anything mind-altering, or even something fatal.

One of Witt's littermates died from ingesting a poisonous mushroom. It's difficult to identify mushrooms...to be safe I would get rid of all of them. Growing up my step fathers family used to go out in groups mushroom hunting, they did it every year and were supposed experts, but his dad had close calls several times, it's a tough skill. You could do a search on local mushrooms and look at a photo guide.

I'm just gonna get rid of all of them. Well, as much as i can find. Poor little littermate of Witt. He must have been misrable!?! It's kinda hard to find all these little shrooms growing in & around the yard, especially when they grow pretty fast in the weirdest of areas.
A couple of old buddies of mine went shroom hunting too when we lived in Seattle (mid 90's). Your right, it is kinda hard. You kinda have to have a known area already, otherwise the only thing you'll find is the cops or some farmer w/ his double barrel pointed at you... LOL
I hope we're talking about the same kinda hunting...?
Anyhow, that was then....

I'll try to do a quick search on the information highway Thanks!

LOL...well, his family was searching for edible, non hallucinagenic mushrooms, but I've had friends search for the other kind as well...I don't even like mushrooms of any kind, I'm always afraid someone made a mistake somewhere along the line and I'll end up dead or talking to the walls.
Witt's littermate, named Rebel lived in California and they had a wooded property. I think they were called Death caps, it took him down pretty fast, it was horrible. I remember the day I heard that I went out and searched my yard. His owners were a retired couple and they were crushed at losing him.

Here is Rebel @ 4 weeks

There were 8 puppies in Witt's litter and of course mom. Everyone who adopted one of the family has kept in touch, we all e-mail each other and pass along pictures and stories. It's been wonderful. I'll post a link to the site we all post pictures on...it belongs to one of the couples who adopted a pup, they named him Migo. There are pictures of all the puppies and momma dog. There is one picture of Rebel, the pup who died, and his owner Paul, everytime I look at that picture it makes me feel both good and sad. You can see in the picture how proud Paul is of his new pup, the emotions in his face are palpable and always touched me. Now that Rebel is gone it makes me sad to think of the loss and how Paul must have felt. They have since adopted a new puppy, and we just included him in as "step brother".

What a gorgeous dog and a tragic story!

I found mushrooms in our backyard as well, shortly after we got Nala. She ate one once without my knowledge until it was too late, and I was so worried! Other than giving her the most foul breath ever, she was fine.

Mushrooms tend to grow in areas that get alot of moisture. So maybe if you water less you may have less problems.
