Hi Everyone,
This afternoon I opened the front door to go to my truck to get something,"when" Freebie (my shitzhu) ran out. There was a chiuaua(spelling) in the yard, You gals will get a kick out of this part...I was dying my hair, so you can imagine what I looked like!!!Yuk! Anyway, before I could get to him, here came the neighbors pitbull from two doors down. Freebie ran after him growling. I was scared to death!!! I ran after Freebie yelling, when he finally stopped, I bent down to pick him up, and the pit growled at me. I told him in a soft voice that: it's o.k. and backed up slowly. This dog was growling the whole time, I turned and walked slowly home. I just knew he was going to come after me, but he didn't, Thank God!!!! I wanted to go back, after dropping off Freebie, but I was afraid. So the next time I see his owner, he's getting a piece of my mind...what little I have left, that is....WHY OH WHY!!!DO PEOPLE LET THIER DOGS RUN LOOSE!!!!! Shaky Susan

Wow, how scary. I can only imagine how you must have felt when this was going on. Im glad you and Freebie were able to get back in the house safely. I hope you will be able to discuss this with your neighbor and that they will take more care in keeping their dog from roaming.

On the flip side....I almost had a heart attack last night and it was my fault!

I went grocery shopping and took Witt with me as I always do, when I got home I had Witt on his leash and was picking up all the bags, there was one bag left...I looked around for people, saw nobody so stupidly chose to drop his leash and grab the last bag. As I turned for the door I heard a screaming and realized it was Witt, I hadn't even heard him leave my side...I dropped everything and tried to figure out which direction the screaming was coming from...yes I said screaming. Panic filled my heart as I raced across the street heading around my neighbors house yelling for Witt, all of the sudden something ran past me almost knocking me over and Witt was in hot pursuit, screaming the whole time, he didn't even hear me yelling his name, I knew whatever it was he was chasing was way too big to be a cat and I was afraid it was a racoon and that the screaming meant the coon had gotten a hold of Witt. I ran after him hollering his name, back across the street, over another neighbors lawn, across another street to a picket fence that Witt was about to go over. I grabbed at the back of his neck and he stopped the screaming and looked at me startled. I grabbed his leash in one hand and his collar in the other, tried to catch my breath and figure what he was chasing. Witt started jumping on the fence, i could hardly hold onto him and he was screaming again. Then I saw what he was looking at...a huge racoon. I have had pet racoons...but never one this big. By this time several neighbors had come out to see what the commotion was. I was rather embarrassed and trying desperately to drag Witt away from the fence. When I got him in the house I checked him over head to toe and found nothing...not a scratch! The screaming had made me think he had been hurt, I have never heard him sound like that, I have heard him bay which is different than a bark, but never this horrible noise. I talked to some catahoula people who said he was just excited and thats the noise he makes. One lady said her dog has such a high pitched screech that it hurts their ears when out hunting.
Witt paced the back door for quite a while trying to get me to let him go back out, I finally lured him away with toys and treats.
Today when I took him to the park for a walk...the neighbor whose yard he had "treed" the coon in asked me if he was alright, I told her he was fine and explained that he was just excited about the coon...I apologized for his disturbing her. She actually asked if I let him loose in her yard..would he kill the coons for her...dumbfounded I asked why she wanted them dead...she said they are living under her house and she is afraid they will kill her dogs ( a Cairn terrier and a Shit zhu). I explained he was only a puppy, he had no training for hunting, and that I was not in favor of letting him kill racoons in any case. I told her if her dogs left the coons alone, they wouldn't hurt her dogs. I really didn't know what to say beyond that. I hope the neighborhood doesn't view my dog as a varmit removal service now!
I actually gave him a training thing with coon scent on it when he was about 7 months old and he showed no interest other than wanting to chew it up like any other toy, he could care less about squirrels even when Dooley is chasing them, so I didn't think he was interested. Now I know...and I will be more careful in the future. I felt really stupid.

That must have been awful, Maisey! But I bet if you had got it on video you could win some cash on Animal Planet.

Susan, this is going to sound like the punchline to a joke, but....what happened to the chihuahua?

Hi Jamiya, the Chihuahua and the Pit live together...Sounds funny huh! That same Pit ate a cat that used to live at this house before we moved here. So he makes me very nervous. The owner is a bit stuck up or something, when I first moved here, I saw him outside, I said hello and he said nothing. "RUDE" and so I already have a problem with that man....I don't tollerate people who think they are something, when thier not....Susan

Please don't blame the pitbull! They are usually very friendly or indifferent towards people and it's certain owners that make people afraid of them (which I would be if one was growling at me!). It's lucky though that your dog didn't get attacked as pitbulls are usually dog-aggressive.

The owner of that pitbull should be ashamed of himself!!

I'm glad to say that not every pitbull is like that.

Hi Neek, I'm not blaming the dog, I blame the owner. If someone or pet were hurt by that dog, he could and should be sued. It's dangerous to let a dog like that, be running free. I used to have a pit, i love them! but I also know what some are capable of doing.
I would rather be safe than sorry!

Well, and if he has killed a cat....I have heard that once a dog kills a cat they acquire a "taste" for it and they are likely to do it again. Any dog, not just pits. Stupid owners!

Weird (but good) that he doesn't eat the chihuahua.

Maisey, I wanted to ask you how you take Witt to the grocery store. Does he just stay in the car while you go in?

Definately agree with you there. Once a dog kills something, they get the "urge" to do it more, Thats why Farmers get so darn mad when their dogs won't quit killing chickens.

This is a fine example as to why Pits have such a bad name. I've known Pits to be sweet and Pits to be mean, and in both situations they were raised completely diffrent, one was loved, the other chained in the back yard.

It disgusts me that people let their dogs run loose in a busy neighborhood, you never know what ANY dog can do if they are hurt or scared. What if a little kid tried to pet that dog and it bit him or her!!!

the officials would have a field day with that a punish the dog instead of the owners (whoms fault it was with their negligence!!!)

Sorry for the venting, it just comes to show that some people are ignorant, if they loved their dogs, they'd watch them and not let them run loose.

As for the little fuzzy, She's brave!!! But lucky!
Little doggie POWER!!!

I take Witt with me to the grocery and leave him in the truck, yes. But of course this is weather permiting, and depends on how long I will be. Bi-Mart which is where i take Jackie for her prescriptions will let you take a dog in as long as it is in a cart. Well I did this with Witt until he was too big for the cart and then started leaving him in the truck. They finally asked me why I never bring him in any more, I told them he didn't fit in the cart anymore and was too heavy to lift like that. They told me I could bring him in on a leash if I wanted, that they missed seeing him. So I do. There are several places where I am a frequent customer, they know I have my dog with me always and they don't care if he comes in with me. I often look for antiques in thrift stores and Witt always comes with me in there too. We have a directory for businesses and hotels etc that are pet friendly in our state, we take advantage of those, and let them know that them being pet friendly was a deciding factor in our using their services.

Maisey, Hello there girl....you are such a GOOD STORY TELLER ! Thanks for the entertainment. GLAD there were NO REAL PROBLEMS.

Made me think of the commerical where the lady is dying her hair and the husband hears her crying in the bathroom. He says, what's wrong HON? AND opens the door....to a red headed (strange red)saying her dye didn't turn out. He says, well, I guess we're not going to OUTBACK, and she says: LET ME GET MY COAT. That's what I envisioned as I read your story.

Thanks for always being her Maisey !!

Blessings

LOL Sugar...I love that commercial! Cracks me up everytime I see it. I am sure thats why the Pit Bull was growling...Susan scared the daylights out of him! (Think E.T. with haircap on, arms in the air flailing around and the yelling....."go home go home ")

Thank you Sugar, I like popping in throughout my day, it's gotten to be habit, maybe even a bad one.

I would have been so scared if I were you!!! I would go tell the owners that their dog was loose. Maybe he just got out and they didn't know. Is he out often???
