I have an almost 2 year old mix breed dog (sheltie/shepherd/???) and for the past couple of weeks, he's been urinating just a small amount on one daughter's floor, and on the bed of my other daughter. We don't think he's sick, as he's not acting any different. We've never changed his diet and he still seems perfectly healthy. He gets along fine with the kids and there doesn't seem to be a jealousy issue. Could he be "marking his territory"?.He's been house trained since a pup so this is a new thing. Has anyone ever gone through this? I'm worried! I need advice! IP: Logged |

I am sorry I have no advice to help you BUT I have also had this problem..My English Setter has been housetrained since a puppy and he also started peeing in both my kids rooms. It started when he was about 2 years old. We had to keep their doors to their room shut,if they ever forgot to close the door you could bet you would find a wet spot. We tried everything but it was like he could not resist. We were never able to break him of this. Unfortunatlely he passed away this passed summer. I hope someone can give you some advise as I am very curious about this also. Good Luck! Karla IP: Logged |

Is he neutered? Be sure and clean the areas well with an enzymatic type cleaner so that he is less likely to urinate there again. I could be wrong but it sound to me like he is "marking". [This message has been edited by nern (edited 12-06-2003).] IP: Logged |

Thanks for writing back. My dog Jake is not neutered. Could that be a reason why he's doing this? I've never thought about that! IP: Logged |

Un-altered males will mark, I have three males, all neutered and they will mark if another dog has come over to our yard and left his "mark", mine don't do that in the house, but they will in our yard. We had a dog here a couple months ago that I found, I kept him while trying to find his owner. He was not neutered, and peed on everything he could in the yard...my three dogs paraded after him marking over his marks...it was kind of humerous watching the marking wars. It would be best for your dog to be neutered, unless there's a reason for not doing it. It's better for his health, he won't have the urge to wander everytime there is a female in heat somewhere and perhaps he won't feel the need to mark everything in site so much. It is possible he has a slight infection, you might want to make sure with your vet just to rule it out. IP: Logged |

I agree with Maisey. My toy poodle used to "mark" all over his previous home and was not altered until he was 5yrs old. His marking considerably decreased after that. I've had him for over a year now and marking in the house has not been a problem. Neutering should completely stop or at least greatly decrease indoor marking. IP: Logged |

My setter Chopper was 4 years old when we brought him home and not neutered either. He marked EVERYTHING! The worst part was we couldnt get him neutered for the first 2 months because he had a severe kennel cough infection. He eventually got the clue and cut back about 60 percent. It completely stopped once he was neutered and I was finally able to announce that Chopper was house broken lol. IP: Logged |
