my 6 yro male dachshund is currently battling an infection of the anal sacs. my vet has suggested surgery for removal. after researching online, it looks to be a quite serious procedure, with some risks/consequences (such as fecal incontinence!) etc. plus I haven't even investigated what the postoperative period would be like?! can only imagine?! does anyone have experience with their dog going through the surgery? as this is only his 2nd infection in 6 yrs., I don't consider the problem overwhelming but don't know if just treating the problem medically versus surgery is best for him? I'm sorry I've never heard of that before. But I have a mini dauchshund, and so I feel your pain...I just know someone here will be able to help you....Please keep us posted! How about another opinion??? Not all vets give the same advise, but maybe this is long time vet of yours, Humn...just a thought. Hope he gets better soon. Good Luck! Susan IP: Logged |

Good for you for researching! I would learn all I could about it and seek a second opinion as well. Perhaps a Holistic vet could offer an alternative to surgery. I know that if a dogs stools are not firm enough the anal sac won't get excreted on a regular basis, what you feed your dog can effect his stools. If and when the sac is not being emptied by natural means it needs to be done by your vet or groomer, and on a regular basis. Beyond that I don't know alot. My Poodle has to have help with his occasionally,I can always tell when because he scoots his butt across the floor or starts licking at it alot. I have never had this problem with my big dogs. Now I had never heard of this. My pom Belle has started the scooting of the butt thing and her stools are much looser since I switched them to Innova. Sound I try another foor or how long does it take their stools to return to normal if ever? IP: Logged |

They should adjust to a new food within a couple weeks. Innova tends to be pretty rich from what I have seen posted here. I have also heard that smaller breeds tend to have more trouble with the anal glands, bt I don't know if that is true or not. IP: Logged |

I don't know much about the anal sacs but I've read that all dogs have them from their primitive relatives but they don't use them. They used to use them much like a skunk, as a defence mechanism that used to ward off strangers (or thats what I've read) If your dog has to have an operation, don't be alarmed as he will only be losing what he dosen't use anyway. Probably like tonsils in people. IP: Logged |
