Indy is a lab pit mix; she has very course fur that is about 1 inch at its longest point, and no under fur. This is going to be her first winter with us, and I am wondering if she will need a coat or sweater. She seems to enjoy the crisp weather, but I worry because she has skin showing on her belly and under her armpits (or what ever they are called on dogs). She is an indoor dog, but she loves to play in the yard. I would have asked the ‘Pit Bulls’ forum, but they don’t seem to have a good attitude towards mixed breeds. Thank You [This message has been edited by HaloKittie (edited 12-04-2003).] IP: Logged |

There was just a post on this a few weeks ago. You should do a search. I think it depends on how cold it is. Which it looks like it gets real cold where you are. my Dog Wylie is similar to Indy except Wylie is tan and White. What a cutie! She has ears just like Wylie too one up one down. Wylie loves the snow! She doenst get cold if she is romping in it. Now this is the mid 30 degress range. And I dont live in it. It is about an hour away I think it gets much colder where you are I would say she needs a coat at certain temps. And at certain activity levels. Someone recently posted that their dog _ think it was a husky cross was shivering in the cold. and Huskys usually love the cold. Also how are her paws some dogs have really senstive pads and may need booties. Honeybear IP: Logged |

I would judge by the behavior of the dog. If he is shivering, he is cold! If he won't put all of his feet down in the snow, his feet are cold! It seems with some dogs there is no rhyme or reason to which ones are cold and which are not.

Thank You, Your right she’ll let me know if she’s cold. I rescued a cat that had frost bite last year, and I know how cold it gets here in lovely Michigan. Indy is my 2nd dog, and Mushka my other dog has an undercoat, and fur all over her body (except on her bellybutton). I’m just concerned because of Indy’s bare pink skin, and she seems to like the cold weather. She is not the brightest (but very very cute) and the past few frosty days when I let the girls out, they want to stay outside and play for hours. I’m just a concerned mom. Mushka will not put a paw outside if it’s raining! She is very stubborn regarding rain. IP: Logged |

She looks like she may have some blue heeler in her, judging from the white spots and how they are mottled, but the non presence of the undercoat baffles me. I wouldn't put a sweater on her when she's playing outside unless she's shivering. She could over heat from playing since their body temp raises during exhurtion of energy. You be the judge. I would say if she is a non energetic dog she may need one. If she runs around like a nut then no. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Why would you say the pitbull forum dosen't like mixed breeds?? I post on there frequently and I own two pit mixes. I don't however, agree with people breeding pitbulls(never mixed) unless they are experienced, their dogs are health tested, the resulting pups are sent to good homes and only if breeding them is to better the breed itself. (If that makes sense) Owning a mixed breed is probably better than owning a pure breed, it shows that there are people willing to give the mixed breeds a fair go. Incidently my two dogs are from the shelter and I picked them out before heaps of pure breds. [This message has been edited by neek (edited 12-06-2003).] IP: Logged |

Hi, I have two pure bred dogs, and i dont think I'm any less loving to animals than the next person. I love them all! mixed or not. I do admire those of you that have gotten your pets at shelters, but just because they are pure bred doesn't mean they don't deserve a good home also. One I bought, the other was givin as a gift from my sister that breeds Shitz shu's... Just a little clarification here, that's all! Susan IP: Logged |

Neek: About the ‘pit forum’ I posted a few things there, and it seemed to me to be a bit stuffy. A few ‘what good is a mixed dog’ comments and its not worth my time. The people here in the ‘all dogs forum’ seem to be just that, all dogs, and have an open mind towards mixes. It’s hard to explain. Indy is a pit mix, and with that there comes some pit characteristics. I was hoping to gain some knowledge from the ‘pit forum’ but more or less got the cold shoulder because of her lack of papers. susan_cude: When I think of shitz shus, a pair of fuzzy white slippers comes to mind! I have two pure heelers, and a mutt...sometimes the mutt is a much better dog than the other two who can be total goofballs. I do know that no matter what they are they are all dogs, and I love em' all!! IP: Logged |
