This is such a sad story. a man, who actually lives a few exit down from me, dogs were shot and killed by a cop. i am not to sure about the details (i saw this on the news last night as i was falling asleep).
as the story goes, the two great danes got out of the house through the front door (the man said the door blew open, he was really torn up, you could tell that these werent just dogs, they were members of his family) and "bit" a woman on the arm. when a cop arrived he found the dogs roaming and when he tried to get them they acted "upset" so he said the only thing he could do was shoot them. they said they pepper spary and tranqs. but nothing brought these dogs down, so they had to shoot, and they didnt just shot them once, they shot those poor dogs a couple of times.
the man was so upset, he said he has never seen those dogs bite anyone and that they were just big lap dogs. (he saved them from the pound) he says he keeps really good care of his dogs and never lets them out to just roam, (it was very windly here the last few days, so i can understand how a door just blew opened)
i dont know, that report really messed with me. i feel they could have done some else. i dont know i was just wondering how ya'll felt about the issue. if i have time later i am going to post a link to the web site that has all the info. telll me what you think. and pray for this guy, he look so upset. he lost two big members of his family.

I think I would take that to court. I understand that cops lives are threatened all the time and as such they don't take chances. But that is just insane.

The thing is though, i have knowen many great danes, and none of them have been main dogs. I dont understand why it had to come to this. you know. the dogs might have been playying. you know. they might not have understood that the cop wanted to take them somewhere and they were playying keep away or something. AH its just horrible.

Hi, That is just horrible! My best friend had a simular thing happen to her moms dog last year in Texas. The Police came to her Mothers place of business, (she lives at, and runs a storage facility) to search for a runaway. The girl was staying with her Father at the facility, she saw the police, got scared, and ran inside. When she did, the door didn't shut all the way. The police pushed the door open, to go in after her, (without stating who they were, or that they were entering the resident) And the Dog went after them, he was shot 8 times, and killed, right in front of Terri's mom. I've met this magnificent animal before. He was the biggest most beautiful, german sheperd, I have ever seen. He was just doing what he was supposed to do, protecting his family. They went to the paper, got a lawer and it did no good. Except that animal lovers sent them alot of letters of support. It was very sad! I'll never forget it...I'll pray for this poor man, you can bet I will...Sincerely, Susan

Thank you for your support. i dont know the man, but i would like to get in contact with them, just to let him know that there are many people out there thinking about him. i dont know if this is ture or not but i think i heard they put about 10 bullets in one dog. can you believe that 10 bullets. there was no need for that, they so could have found a way to get those dogs with out killing them. it just makes me sick.

he needs to know that people are out there that are supporting him. so many people were on the polices side, and thats not fair. if you push and push and push then yes a dog will get aggersive. you know. its just not fair.

IMO, if the policeman "had" to shoot them, he could've at least shot them somewhere not fatal, like a paw or something, then he could've at least caught them!

Thats just awful. We had a guy shoot our Red heeler male "Pete". He was the sweetest dog in the world. The neighbors just shot him with a .22 rifle in the butt, and the bullet came out his chest, becuase they thought it was funny.
We reported it to the police, but all they did was give them a warning.

I would definately take this to court if I were him. For one thing, "proceedure" or whatever they want to call it was not done!! #1 you don't pepper spray a dog unless its attacking you, that will only make them run away! and if they would have tranquilized them, they wouldn't have had a problem.
If someone was running after me yelling and stuff, I'd run too!

I feel for this man, but I also see how the lady was scared, with all these Pit bull attackings, I would have called animal control too, but told them not to do anything, just to find the owners.

If they were really being aggressive toward her, and as big as they are, they would have done some damage, which they obviously did not.

What is the world coming too?

isnt it horrible! yeh they are big dogs, the there size can be kinda scarey if you dont know that that type of dog is close to harmless! but come on tranqs would have brought those dogs down. they didnt do everything they could. if they did the dogs would still be alive.

and i am so sorry to hear about your dog! that is horrible. just wrong! thats why my cat is an indoor cat only. because there are sick people out there that will do mean things to an animal just for fun.

I was driving home one day and the car in front of me went off to the side of the road. i thought he might be avoiding an accident so i slowed down. but then i noticed that he only did that so he could hit a bird!

a few weeks later my friend and i were walking her pit bull. we did have him off leash and that was totally wrong becasue if we didnt he might still be alive! he was just useing the bathroom and this guy in a car came up on to the crub and hit the dog and yelled i hate pit bulls! killed her dog right in front of her! just becasue he didnt like animals he took her baby from her! it was horrible. and it teaches you a lesson you know! ahh people can make me so sad some times!

Hi, Great Danes aren't always harmless. My grandson was bit in the face by one, and had to have plastic surgery to reduce the scaring. It was his other Grandmas dog, thought this dog was sweet, had no idea he had it in him to bite. My grandson just went to pet him, and got bit. I know that the dog must have felt threatened in some way, but I wasn't there, so I don't realy know all the facts. Anyway I know this might make some people mad, But! I would have gotten rid of the dog. I would never have a dog that has bitten a child "or anyone" for that matter. My Grandchildren are more important, than a dog.

Don't get me wrong, I love my dogs VERY MUCH! but not at the expence of my grandcildren....Sincerely, Susan

OH my GOODNESS!!! He hit her infront of yall!! Oh I would have gotten the licence plate, tracked them down and....OHHH!!!

That makes me sooo mad. I understand that most dogs can "snap" no matter what breed they are. Its sad that the pits have been "deemed" the "dogs from Hell".

I've personally known some pretty tough and mean little Chiuahuhas (spelling??)
Its funny, but they are just a vicious as any others.

And the German Shephard, Oh I would have died. He was serving his family....
IF any one ever pulled a gun on Smokey and Charllotte, I'd have to definately be incarcerated, I would kill whomever harmed them, I don't have children, so they are my babies. Granvel is even more protective of them.

Oh, I tell you, I'm sooo glad there is a forum where all us dog, horse, and all other animal lovers can share our stories and family!

Oh I think trike is quite the gentleman! SOOO cute!!

Is he beagle?? or Bassett??

Cops are way too quick to shot dogs. I have heard of a lot of stories like this were dogs end up being shot. Like they couldn't call animal control to come and catch the dogs. Animal control could have used those pole things or even a tranquilizer if they had to. Come on.

How is a dog supposed to act when a stranger approaches them with a gun. Like they know what a police officer is.

If that happened to my dogs I would definately sue. The cop shot the dogs without even knowing if they bit someone or the circumstances of the bite.

I wouldn't keep a dog that maliciously bite a child, but a lot of kids are asking for it. Most kids don't pet, they hit, they pull the dogs tail and tease the dog. I've seen this happen a couple of times where a kid was tormenting a dog or cat and when the animal hissed or snapped trying to defend itself the parents got mad at the animal. If I was the animal, I would have bit the kid too.

I agree with you. I know that children can sometimes be abusive to animals, I don't like that either! but if you would have seen the bite, that this dog gave to my grandson, you would have been upset too, it tore his face wide open. He sure didn't deserve that.

Not offended! just stating a fact...Susan

Samsintentions!!! Trike is a beagle basset mix i think. she has shorter legs and longer ears then most beagles. plus she doesnt have the energy level of beagle. she is lazy as a basset. but as cute as a beagle!

susan_cude!!! I am so sorry about your grandson i am sure he is better but still it doesnt change a thing. once my lip was bitting when appoching a female dogs with pups. I was 9 and didnt know anybetter (my family was big animal family so i was taught not to go up to a mama dog with pups) and bit strigth through my upper lip. then two weeks later my friend did the same thing to a different dog and got his lip totally bitten off! (it was his bottom lip) the people who owned the dog had to put the dog down i think it was a rott or a pit

puttin510 and fleafly!!! i had never heard of a dane doing anything like that before either. but you know the dogs were scared to death i bet. you know. they had guys who they dont know shouting at them and coming at them, what do you think a dog is going to do. you know. what ever, i just get so mad thinking about it

My sister got a beagle for her boyfriend, He's the cutest thing, but oh so hyper and can be vicious at times. We dont' know why. He's always been loved but at times he'll walk by you a bite you as he passes and keeps on going as if he's done nothing...he'll do this to the legs on chairs and cabnets too!!!

As for danes, I did a serch on Yahoo for dane attackings, and unfortunately I found many. Most were abuse cases where the dogs were being rescued and were too vicious so they had to be put down, but thats because they were so badly abused!! How did they know that the rescuers were helping them?? they probably thought it was time for another beating and they weren't having it!! So sad

As for the Grand child. Sorry to hear that.

Kids can be cruel not knowing it. Gris, our first heeler bit our 2 yr old cousin in the forehead, he was sleeping (heavily at that) and Daniel bent down to give him a kiss and scared the crud out of him. And as in all Heeler nature, they nip at everything when startled. So it wasn't his fault, but still scary. He knew he did wrong as soon as he did it. He went and hid and whined...

My old neihbours own a Husky and one day it escaped, no one really knows how. She was spotted later on in another neighbourhood.

Luckily someone recognized the dog and called my neighbour, he left immediatly to get her, she was very skiddish so I could see her being mistaken for a Wolf.

When he got there the police where there trying to catch her, they probably would have resorted to guns if he hadn't shown up. She came right to him, he didn't have to call her or anything she was only 1yr old at the time and very scared.

Someone also accused his two dogs of bitting him, even though he couldn't show the owner a wound at the time. They took it to court. Now both dogs remain pened up in this large encloser with a top and tied up in the closure. They are not even allowed to take the dogs for walks.

The guy who sued and some other people purposely walk their dogs up the street (it's at the end of a dead end street) and hang out their driving the two dogs crazy.

I just can't believe some people.
