I am looking for a dog, it needs to be a small breed, around $200 or less (that it rare i guess!) and it really sweet. i absolutely love Chihuahuas, but they have a lot of medical problems from what i have read, i would like a small breed dog that is of course cute, and very affordable, after brutus left this earth, i have been aching for a dog. i have two others, but those are more my mothers than mine (i am only a high school student, lol) i want a baby of my own that i can train on my own and that will sleep in the bed with me and love me. the other dogs love me, but i didn't get to work with them, my mother did ALL of the training and stuff, and they only sleep in her bed. So what is a good small breed dog that i can look into that will also adjust to an apartment when i move away to college?

Hi, Too bad you live in T.N. or i would just give you one of my new puppies. Dachshund/Pomeranian, VERY SMALL & CUTE! My dauchy is very sweet, good natured and a one person dog. Good luck with the search! Try your local shelters, I'm sure you can find something. And after the Holiday, you may have more luck, unfortunantly, people get pet's for Christmas, that they don't want, or can't handle, when they see how much work they require....Sincerely, Susan

I would look through a book of dog breeds and mark down what you are interested in. Then, take that list and look on the internet for temperments and what care that these breeds of dog require. That way you can make the best choice on what is right for you. I haven't really heard about Chihuahuas having lots of medical problems so you might want to do more research on that just to be sure. Good luck.
PS - Breed rescues are a great place to get a dog! Look on the internet for one in your area or close to you. Since there are so many homeless dogs out there it is something to consider. Again, good luck in your search.

Hi, I think chihuahas make fantastic pets, they adapt to any families, my neighbour up the road has three long-haired chihuahas and she has four children from age 2 weeks and up, they are very sweet with the kids and they love being lap-dogs, her dogs don't have any health problems and the eldest is 6 years old. They are very entertaining and all three love to sit in my lap when I visit. I think they would make the perfect pet. I'm considering getting one for my 5 year old daughter..

Also, look into yorkies, silkies, maltese, Bichon, mini poodle, mini dachshund, shihtzu, pomeranian, and some "intentional" crosses like malti-poo, shih-poo, etc. I wouldn't rule out a chihuahua without more research first as well. Some of the terriers are also small and cute.

Find a good breed book (such as Barron's Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds) and/or look them up on the internet and find care requirements, breed temperament, etc. Going through a rescue agency is a VERY good idea, because they can give you an idea of the temperament of the specific animal.

I think some of the health problems of the tiny breeds occur more often in the VERY tiny ones - the "teacups" as some call them. They are frighteningly cute, but dogs were never meant to be that small. Keep an eye out for that!

Good luck in your search. Someday I will have a tiny lapdog, and a giant dog as well!

She might be referring to the medical problems that most pure bred dogs have a susceptability to. If you're worried about the possible medical problems of a pure bred dog, get a cross like a malti-poo for example. That's one of the reasons I got one. Crossing the breeds decreasses the chances of genetic diseases a lot. They tend to cost less than a pure bred and are often times more readily available. I picked a malti-poo because of their size, temperment and because I have allergies and they don't shed. Word of warning though. If you pick a popular Poodle cross, make sure that it's parents are pure bred. That's the only way you can be sure of the genetic variations. If one parent is a malti-poo and the other a poodle or something, you can never be quite sure which traits will come forward. My neighbor down the street has an adorable chihuaha pomeranian cross. Shaved down he looks like a chihuaha but his hair does grow out longer like a pomeranians. Very cute.

By the way, I don't remember reading what Brutus diagnosis was. Was it parvo or was it something else? If it was parvo I'd suggest you sanitize your home and yard before getting another dog.

Brutus's diagnosis was not parvo, they aren't sure what it is, what ever bloat is, it COULD be that, his stomach got huge the day he died (or so the vet tech said) but i have no clue of what bloat is

If you are looking for a small, possibly shelter dog, in your area, you should try www.petfinder.com . Type in whatever breed you are looking for, or what size dog, and then the age and where you live! It usually comes up with TONS of matches!

Look no further than a beagle! I have always had large breed dogs and adored them all, but my sweet 12 week old beagle is the sweetest of them all. He will only grow to be aobut 22 pounds or so. So precious! ann

Daphne,

For a really sweet dog, I recommend a Shih Tzu or a little dog that is part of the companion set of breeds. They make great pets because they have been bred for intelligence and loyalty to their owner. I have a Shihpoo because I was allergic to the pure Shih Tzu and she is an extremely attentive dog and learned fast - probably due to the poodle in her. She prefers the company of her owner to other dogs. Shih Tzus aren't very expensive and Shihpoos are less expensive still - being a cross breed. You do have to plan for having them groomed every couple of months because the fur grows fast and long. I get Sophie shaved down about every 2 months and she looks just like a poodle (until her hair grows out)!

Another excellent small breed is the italian greyhound. I haven't owned one personally, but the ones I've seen are extremely loyal companions. However, it's best if they have a fenced in yard with lots of room to run because they need to expend a great deal of energy. If I didn't live in an apartment, I probably would've gotten one! Your best best for obtaining one is probably through rescue as there aren't very many breeders and the cost can be upwards of $600. I've heard they can be difficult to housebreak if you live in a colder region because they have a thin coat and very little insulation to their body, so they don't like to go out in wintertime. A lot of IG owners litter train to get around this.

Hope all that helped!

I would suggest going to your local shelter and looking there. You can pick a dog that you get along with. There are a lot of good dogs at shelters who need homes.

Hmmmmmm... How about a Boston Terrier?
A Norfolk Terrier?
A PUG?
How about a French Bulldog?
A Bichon Frise, We-Wi?!?
Ummmm, a Miniture Poodle?
A West Highland White Terrier?
A Long Haired Chihuahua?
Okay, a Miniture Pinchure (looks like a Chihuahua?!?)
I'd say a Miniture Shar Pei, but they "can have a BiGG boy-rude attitude, like mine . And many others.
Well, that was a few right?
How about a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?

Wait you did say that your going to be going to college, so being that your going to be under super-stress w/ studying, and getting those magnificent "A's", you'll probably want to let loose weekly and go off running or something w/ your new pal/buddy... So, how about a Jack Russel Terrier?
Not that any of the others would'nt fit your athletic schedual. Just something to consider other than something to snuggle with .
Keep us posted on what your leaning towards... interesting. Picking the right pal/dog is very important, but fun!
Make the right choice, it's life-long commitment , but a beautiful one!

My little peekapoo loves me to death....almost too much some time. They are very possessive of one person, but will love others too. A little more active than I bargained for, but she has helped me lose 20 lbs I needed to lose. Her love and humbleness make her irresistable. If attention and love is what you want...consider the peekapoo. SMART, SMART too....knows upwards of 60 words. Sometimes I think she is human and can understand. She literally talks to me though her body language and looks as they all do. Sometimes I think she will actually open her mouth and words will come out.

Pugs are the best! thats what u want...but u must have time for this breed...The are very cute and loving. They cost more than $200 so im not really sure if a Pug would be right for you, but they are well worth it. Way better than a chihuahua...in my opinion. They are the cutest and most charming breed. They are natural clowns and are so funny. If u got a pug u would absolutely love her. Genie is 5 months and is absolutely adorable. I can't believe nobody mentioned a pug...shame on u...don't know what your missing out on.
