Thanks for asking!

It's so hard to say. I e-mailed the trainer today, but she is out of town at the national agility trials for a few days.

Things went well for a couple of days, but Nala is starting to challenge me. She doesn't want to stay down all day, and I feel like a dictator making her do it and I'm sure she knows that!

Sometimes if she won't stay down and I try to make her, she jumps at me and nips at me, and sometimes even barks or "growls" at me. If I grab the lead too close to her, she will "bite" my hand.

Sometimes it's hard to get her to obey "down." If I start to get angry and it shows in my voice, then she obeys. That's not what I am aiming for.

I am so worried I am damaging our relationship! I have started reading the "Bones would fall from the sky" book (Susan Clothier) and will see what the trainer says when she gets back.

I thought about trying to get some people together to host a Susan Clothier seminar, but she's booked until 2005. But she's holding one a couple hours from here next April - subject undetermined yet, though.

So, in the meantime I am sort of modifying the rules. I make her down for a good amount of time, while I am working. Other times I have her tethered but let her get up. But at least she can't chase the cats at all. My husband generally ties her lead to the chair when he is up with her at night. She mostly sleeps then anyway and that prevents her from chasing the cats if they run through.

She also is better about not chewing the lead. She generally only chews it when she gets it wrapped around her - which is usually when she is getting wiggly.

The trainer says she shouldn't play in the house, because she needs to learn self-control inside the house. But we like to play with her inside, especially when it is cold and wet out. I guess she said Nala will earn this freedom back. But from what I gather from what I have read from Susan Clothier, it is fine to play with her inside if she is able to obey us when we tell her to stop (and if we initiate it). She needs to play by our rules.

I will see what the trainer says when she gets back to me. I also signed up for agility starting in January, if the class isn't full. Maybe in the spring we will give herding a try.

I also need to remind myself that this dog is still a puppy and I need to cut her some slack.
