I got trike from pound three years ago. before taking her home, i got her fixed. when i picked her up the doc told me that she was in heat when he ficed her and it was going to be an extar 20 dollars. i didnt understand, and he didnt really give me any explanation on why it cost more. when i asked he just said more had to be done!??!!?? ( i dont go to him anymore!) well trike dog recovered fine, and she (in my eyes) has been a normal dog. but recently i have been reading that it is very bad to fix you dog when it was in heat.

what could happen, she seems normal.

sidenote. i have never had a puppy before, and i have never had a dog that wasnt fix when i got him or her. this was the first dog i have had to get fix. honesntly and i know this might make me sound stupid, but i dont know what goes on when a dog is in heat. i can take a guess, but i never really had any experiance with it.
plus when i got trike, she went stright to the vet. i didnt take her home or anything. (they said a lady brought her in becasue she was roaming a parking lot. so either she was a runway or a street dog. my guess a runaway, becasue when i got her, she acted like was beaten by whoever had her first.) so what do ya think. what kinda effects can this have on a female dog???

Its mainly that the surgery is a higher risk because the uterus is bleeding. Its a more difficult surgery when the dog is in heat because of the visibility factor for the doctor, its a messy procedure when they are in heat, and since she is bleeding there is more of a risk that she can become anemic during the surgery and crash. She would require IV fluids and supportive monitoring and care during the surgery. That is probably why it cost more than usual.
Some doctors will still do the surgery some will try to avoid it. It all depends on how the doctor feels about the situation.

Fixing a dog when it is in heat is a bad idea, our vet once told me that it can lead to serious infections and mistakes. Though if done right there are usually no complications.

When a female is in "heat" she's going through a minstral period similar to a humans. Though not as regular as a human. After a dog has "whelped" or Birthed, she will come into heat at about 10 weeks after. She will then repeat her cycle every 28 days for about 3 times, if not bred, they will then come into heat only once every 4 to 6 months.

There is a period of 3 days that the female will bleed to clean out her Uterus, during this time she will not "stand" to be bred. Then next 3 days will be the time period of breeding, she will secrete a clear fluid and will tolerate the male. After this time she'll be pregnant for a period and then have the babies, the babies will wean at 5-6 wks and when the females reach approx 6 months they too will begin to cycle.

Hope that clears up your questions!
