This is probably a dumb question, but how can you tell if a dog has a double coat? What does it look like?

Double coat... usually a soft undercoat, with a stiffer overcoat. When the dog sheds, it's mostly undercoat. Some breeds that have it are Labs, Huskys (and other northern breeds), and GSDs (at least many that I've known).

Yup ...what he said. The undercoat is soft, kinda fuzzier. The outercoat..I call them gaurd hairs, are stiffer and usually longer.
Dooley has a double coat, Witt has a single coat and Darby.....well he has hair, curly hair! He is the Poodle.
Part her hair with your fingers, or blow on it until it separates so you can see and feel the difference.

Hmmm, I don't think she does. It just seems to be one thick layer (especially on the top of her back). She doesn't seem to be bothered by the cold, which is why I wondered. My terriers shivered whenever it got cold, poor things.

We got a dusting of snow last night, and she was sort of surprised by it this morning. I can't wait to see what she does when it really snows. Although I am going to have a heck of a time drying her off every time she goes out! Maybe I will look for booties....

My Heelers have double coats, its easy to tell, they will have a short thick undercoat to keep them warm and on top of that they will have stiffer, coarser, longer top coat. THis repells dirt, water, and helps protect their skin.

Rufus has one. I notice if I don't brush him correctly he starts looking bulked up. Which I think in the winter he needs. There was a time I just thought he was getting fat. The undercoat on him is soft white hair. Not sure if all dogs have the same color undercoat.

Umm... I'm actually a "she". No harm done though

One other thing, the undercoat is often a lighter shade than the outer one, don't know why, but that's always been my experience. In some dogs with a lot of undercoat, you can actually see tufts of it sticking out from under the outer furs, especially when the undercoat is ready to shed out.

I got a pair for Goo from Petedge for $8.99, they appear to be as good quality as the ones you get from petsmart, etc, only 1/2 the price. From what the weather people say (like they ever know ), we might get a chance to try them out this weekend

I saw some at the specialty store where I was buying Nala food tonight, but I was worried she would skid around in them. It would take care of having to dry her feet when she comes in, though!
