Hi,
We have a 1.5yr old Golden Retriever.

Digging:
Does anyone have any clever solutions to a dog digging in the back yard? I’ve read that it’s a sign of boredom. We have plenty of toys outside for him to curb the activity but he just get’s into those digging moods sometimes… This is not a serious problem but a slight annoyance to have a cratered back yard and dirty paws in the house.

Rawhides:
Has anyone found cheap rawhides on the internet or at a store? I’ve found them to be pretty expensive at pet supply stores and Target. Any idea’s would be helpful!

Thanks for all the wonderful posts on our “Should we get a second dog”… We are still having discussions on if/when we should adopt a second dog!

Thanks!
Brent

I have yet to reply to any questions but heres my advice on the digging. I have a 7 month old Aussie/Pit Mix and boy does she love to dig! She has made paths of holes all around our back yard!! I thought it was cute at first becuase I never had a dog that dug like she did but now it has to come to a stop. My Nala has plenty of toys in our back yard but I believe its in her instinct and just out of curiosity that she digs. I tell her "NO" everytime I see her doing it and she listens and goes and gets one of her toys for me to play with her. I would just try to get her out of the habit! The sooner the better!

Arrrgh! I replied and then my answer got lost. Let me try again.

There have been posts recently about both digging and rawhides. You might want to do a search and see what you come up with.

For digging, I do remember a couple of solutions. One was to fill in the holes and put the dog's poo on top or just under the surface. Dogs don't like to dig where they have poo'ed.

Another is to give the dog a place they are allowed to dig and teach them to only dig there. Of course, this requires time and attention on your part to catch him digging in the wrong spot and redirect him to the right spot.

As for rawhides, they actually can be harmful to your dog. You might want to look into better chews. I have had some luck lately with bully sticks. You can also stuff a Kong for him. Greenies are excellent chew treats, but they go through them pretty fast, in my experience.

Hi, my husky digs holes and I spoke with my vet about them. He told me most dogs will dig small holes to lay in, since the ground is cooler. She doesnt dig large holes and she does lay in them. Seemed to make sence to me since she is a snow dog, But then again there are just some dogs that must dig everything up. Just thought I would throw my two cents in.

Stay away from Rawhide, but if your dog loves rawhide go for the Compressed kind. It's safer, doesn't splinter or come off in big chunks.

And those bullysticks are great!! The cheapest place to get them is to order them direct from the company. Their website is
www.bullysticks.com

Their shipping is really reasonable!

oh digging, digging, digging....

Our yard must have been blesses by God, as its sooo Holy!!!seems like every step you take you fall in a hole.

Thank goodness my dogs only dig when they are running around outside the Kennels. For some strange reason, they don't dig during the day when we're at work in thier Kennel runs....I guess they like being clean and proper in there....dunno...

As far as fixing the problem... I've tried sprinkling pepper in the holes, but as soon as the wind blows really hard or it rains, that solution is down the drain...

I found that rawhide gave my dogs really bad gas. I now have them chewing on the nylon type chews. They are more expensive but last forever and are safe.

Nala actually eats the velvet chews. And this morning, she was breaking pieces off a hard plastic doggie "keyring". I am beginning to think she will always be a vigorous chewer, even without the influence of teething. And I will always worry about what she is managing to eat!

LOL, got Nala a new bully stick and she has been working on it ALL NIGHT. She hasn't even had a walk today. Silly doggie!
