We had our puppy for 2 days when it came down with parvo. She was 8 weeks old and had her vaccine at 6 weeks. After 3 days in the hospital and $1500 in med expenses, she passed away on Thanksgiving morning at 8:30 a.m. We are very sad and distraught and plan on going after the breeder. We would love another puppy and have sprayed bleach throughout the house. How long after spraying the yard until it is safe again for another puppy?

Thank you for your condolences. We are sick over this and through reading the other messages, I've learned that it could survive up to 9 months in the dirt! We just got her last Saturday so we are very determined to replace but only when our house and yard are safe. We also have a 5 year old Golden Ret. and she is fine since she has been fully vaccinated. The hard part is locating a Maltepoo breeder in our state. I only can find them out of state and that is an added expense for shipping on a plane. We will just have to give it time. She was a gift to my son for his birthday.

Gosh, I am so sorry for your loss. I don't know how long after you bleach the house that it is safe to get another pup. I know there are some knowledgeable people here at this site that probably do. I hope everything works out for you. Good luck.

Parvo can actually survive in the dirt for up to 9 YEARS!!

It's very sad that your puppy died and no dog should go through that. I'm guessing that she didn't have her needles when you bought her? Shots for Parvo start working around two weeks after she has them which makes me think she contracted it from her breeders. You need to notify them straight away and YES give them a piece of your mind!! Sadly your pup was another victim of bad breeding!!

I'm not sure how you would treat your backyard or for how long. I guess it would go on how often she was in the yard, if only for a couple of weeks then it shouldn't need that much treatment.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help and I'm really sorry for your loss.

Thank you Neek. We only had Sandy at our house for 3 days and in that time she had diareah about 3 times outside and 1 time in her cage and 2 times on our carpet. I have since bleached the carpeted areas thoroughly and tried to locate where she went outside. It's so tiny and we did clean it after she went. I have sprayed bleach on the spots where I think she was. We have tried to contact the breeder and I only get a voicemail. It is her cell phone so she use to have a message with her voice, now I get an automated message. Do you think she changed her number? She was very concerned about the puppy when we were telling her about Sandy. Does not understand where she could have gotten Parvo. Regardless, she doesn't know Sandy died since we cannot get a hold of her. We will try again today and most likely, take her to court for reimbursement. Hopefully by the spring we will be able to get another puppy. Thanks again. Sharon

If you get a new pup in the future, make sure you purchase one that has had its needles. Keep him/ in the house for 2-3 weeks after you bring him/ home to ensure that the parvo shot has kicked in, then an annual booster for parvo should be given after that. (they need other shots as well)

Every breeder who's pups have had their first shots should give the potential owner a vaccination card for their pup as proof that he/ has had them, then you take the card to vet each time he/ needs a shot.

Please buy from a responsible breeder as you will save yourself alot of heartache later on. Good luck and I'm sure the next pup will be alot more rewarding for you.

BTW, your backyard should be fine providing your new dog has its shots.

The protocol that is usually recommended is to wait atleast 9 months before bringing a new pup into your home.
Otherwise your new puppy could come down with it as well.
It can live in your soil for up to 9 years.
Treat your yard regularly with bleach and a cleaner called parvasol once a week for a few weeks.
If you cant wait a few months for a new puppy or if you are very worried about a new addition try going with a puppy that is around 4 or 5 months old. That way they have had several series of vaccinations and their immunity will be hire than an 8 week old puppers.

MaydaysMom,
Thanks for the info. Can I get parvosol at any pet supplier? We are actually looking into a litter that will not be ready until February. The puppy would be around 12-14 weeks old. The breeder is out of state and waits longer to ship them. That is a good thing since the shots would be well in its system. Our yard is huge and the puppy only went in 3 spots. Do you think treating those areas only will kill it? I have also treated all of our shoes that we have worn out there. I still get nervous that we have it in our carpet. We continue to spray the whole house everyday with the bleach solution. I am praying that this does the trick. Otherwise, I think we should wait to be safe and try for the summer if not then, then a year from now. Thanks for your help!

Hi, i am sorry for your loss...

I breed german shepherds and one thing i do is give the new owners a vaccination card with dates dogs have been vaccinated along with a 6 week insurance policy..

Parvo can be contracted just by walking the puppy from where the dog came from to the car.

I wouldnt advice getting a puppy yet until you make sure everywhere is clear.

Puppies that have had there lost shot should not be taken for walks until 2 weeks after it was given a yearly booster is a must to make sure they stay covered to prevent anything like this happening again...

Again my deepest sympathy ..

mike

Thank you. We did get a vaccination record from the lady. We have a 5 year old Golden Retriever who was quite expensive, $1,000 to be exact. She was from a highly recommended breeder and came from champion lines, with no illness in the line. However, when she turned 1, she developed hip displaysia! We went to 2 different vets and it was confirmed. I went back to the breeder and she didn't believe us and got angry. I told her to call the vet verify the diagnosis. She never did and she didn't give us any compensation toward the dog. I feel that as a breeder, she should have given us something for all of our trouble. We had planned on breeding her, but had to change our plans due to the displasia. She has had no re-occurrence of the displasia and is doing fine. Now she gets chronic ear infections! She has had about 15 infections since her 1st year. We are very timid about buying a pure bred since we paid so much for a "healthy" dog and got an "un-healthy" one. She is a love and sleeps with my 11 year old. We will love her forever. Maybe we're just meant to have her only for now. Sorry to be rambling on. I'm a "chatty cathy"!

First I want to apologize because that is hard to go through. But I can tell you what I was told from my vet. My neighbor got a dog and found it had parvo. We were told to treat everything with bleach. They said that the bleach kills it instantly and we wouldn't have to worry about the parvo as long as we cleaned everything. I even hooked up one of those miracle grow sprayers for fertilizer and added bleach and bleached my whole backyard (because he was at my house) So as far as it living and stuff like I said I was told as long as it came in contact with bleach it would be gone. As far as it living for several months and stuff and new puppies getting it if you didn't wait, well I got a puppy exactly 3 weeks after this incident who was a free puppy with no shots no nothing and she was in my backyard and everything and never got parvo. Maybe I was just lucky but I just wanted to share my experience with parvo. So good luck and I hope you get that new puppy
