brutus, my foster puppy isn't doing good at all, he is sick, and he isn't getting better, we are force feeding him, but you can still see all of his ribs, he is almost just a skeleton...it makes me sick to pet his ribs, there is no meat on them. he is on medication for coccidia, today was day three of his medicine, he finished up his wormmer the vet gave us, but he is always sleeping, never energetic. when they are getting rid of the worms, is there sometimes a drop or two of blood and worms in their stool? he has diarrhea, and today there was 1 worm and a tad (not much at all) of blood in it. we can't take him to the vet, because it is a holiday and everyone is closed except for the 24/7 emergency place, 8 hours away. what should i do? that is the only time he has had bloody stool, and we give him about 12cc of pedialyte every hour. what else can i do? i am scared it is parvo, but his parvo test came back neggative. please post!

Daphne, does the vet have an emergency number you can call? Or is there another vet that is near you? How small of a town do you live in? What I am thinking is that he needs to see a vet ASAP.

yes, the vet has an emergency #, he is the only one in town that will treat a foster dog, non of the other vets called me back last time i had an emergency with a foster dog, but he is in michigan right now with his family, he will be back on friday. i live in a very small town, we don't even have a pet supply place, we have to got about 3 hours away for one, and the emergency 24/7 place is about 8 hours away. his stool is not bloody, only that once, and he is drinking water on his own, just not eating on his own. All he does is sleep, and we force him to drink pedialyte as well. We are making sure he isn't getting dehyrated, but we are very scared, the last foster dog i had died of parvo, even though we did all we could, and so did the vet....

Hi Daphne, I'm sorry to hear about your pup.
I thought I would toss this in the basket of info for whats it's worth. When my Poodle Darby had to have his surgeries, they always put him on A/D, he wouldn't eat it, one of the techs was force feeding it to him and the vet walked in and was irritated, he couldn't understand why if the dog was spitting it out as fast as she could shove it in...she would keep doing it, anyhow, he suggested I go buy Campbells Chicken Noodle soup and lightly heat up small portions for him. He did eat that, even if I had to force feed it to him, he didn't spit it out. The vet said most animals absolutely despise the A/D. Was your pup tested a second time for the Parvo?..It's my understanding that they can have a false negative the first time if it's early enough...I have never dealt with Parvo so maybe someone else can put their two cents in here. Is he throwing up what you feed him? Still have diarrhea? Or is he just refusing to eat?

well, he hasn't thrown up since 2a.m. this morning, but yes, he still has diarrhea, but it isn't bloody, only that one time that it had a worm in it, and i thought it might be because of the worms he was disposing of (he has finished his worm treatment so they should be all gone!) But i will be back on in about 10 minutes, i am going to get some chicken noodle soup!

The blood may have been from the worms detaching from the intestinal wall...but here again, I am talking in guesses, I am not a vet. Until you can get him to a vet I would focus on getting food and water in him. As much water(or pedialite) as possible, that is, that he doesn't throw up right away. Small frequent amounts. It's very easy for a pup to dehydrate. Try the chicken soup, and see what happens. Poor little man.

I would..but then I am the worrier big time so I probably wouldn't sleep anyway. Maybe ask that emergency vet how often he should get the peialite and food and then get up that often. I'm thinking good thoughts for you both.

coccidia and giardia can cause bloody stools. If they pup has already been diagnosed with coccidia that might be causing the blood.
Did the vet prescribe panacur?
I would definately have him checked for parvo again. especially if you've had it in your house before.

Good luck doll, keep us posted.
