Hello! We bought our Beagle puppy yesterday and it is sooo cute.! It is a lap puppy for sure. I am in college online full time and so I do my schoolwork during the day while the kids are in school and he wants to be in my lap 24/7. LOL My 10 week old kitten adores him and this afternoon they napped wrapped up in each other. Adorable!!

The thing I have noticed is it is SO submissive! I had a great dane for 9 years, til he passed away, who was that way his entire life. Everytime you would go to him, he would, in his excitement, wet a little, sometimes a lot! lol This puppy didnt do it yesterday, but it just did it for the third time today. I wish it was more self confident. Maybe he will be once he gets more used to us and our house, but for now he seems quite submissive. Has anyone ever had a dog like this who peed when you gently picked him up?

PS I go towards him very quietly and gently and it still doesnt work. Is it a puppy thing? It wasnt with my great dane. LOL Thanks! Ann

I'd give the pup some time to adjust, everything is so new. Then if it is still happening later on address it. In the meantime maybe try squating down a ways away from the puppy and calling him to you in a happy voice, you'll be more on his/her level and it may be less intimidating. You also get to practice "come" doing this.

Nala used to pee on me, just a little, when I picked her up when we first got her. She did it for the first few days. I think getting down on the pup's level first, as Maisey suggested, will help.

If he is still doing it after a week or so, I would look into more solutions. You also want to bring a new pup to the vet within a week to get a checkup and wormings and all that good stuff.

We had a german shepherd dog that used to wee on my dad all the time but dad used to smack him all the time for digging in the garden!! I'm guessing that they do it because they are nervous and/or scared. If he gets lots of love then I'm sure he will grow out of it.

Teddy my Yorkie has a big problem with this. He a year old now. I ask my company before they come into the house to ignore him. This seems to help, because if someone comes in and just greets him and he's all excited and jumping around he will go right on them. He went on my neighbors foot oneday. I was outside with him and Teddy got all excited, my neighbor went to pet him and out it came all over his sneakers and it was a lot, not to mention I had just moved there ... anyway. It seems to help if I ask people to ignore him for the first 5 minutes they are in my house and then acknowledge him. It works,I'd say 90% of the time.

Hi! Thanks for all of your advice! I do plan on enrolling him in obedience class next year sometime. I look forward to it as I have never attended a class before.

He has since stopped urinating when I pick him up, but last night he piddled a tiny amount when he was animatedly playing with our daughter on the floor tug-of-war with my husband's tie. LOL

He has really started to come into his own in the past few days and it's great to watch. Btw, I have never laid a hand upon any animal in my entire life and my children are incredibly gentle as well. We do not yell at the puppy either. I think he urinated because he was nervous being in a new surrounding and not knowing what to expect. Still, I dont know how to keep him from piddling though during active play. How do you train that behavior? lol ann

After playing is one time that they generally do have to go potty. If he goes during, then I would suggest to take him out right before you play with him. If he doesn't go then, play a little bit to get him riled up and then take him out to potty. When you come back in you can resume the play session.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Our 7 month old Mini Wire Dachshund pees all the time whenever anyone touches her. I was hoping she would grow our of this but many people have said that it is a trait with the dachshunds.

Ideas?
